Race Fans pour into Jennerstown for NASCAR Double Header

Jennerstown, Pa.-(June 19, 1999)- A near sell-out crowd, close to 10,000 race fans, packed the stands for the NASCAR Double Header at Jennerstown Speedway Saturday, June 19th. The Double Header featured the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series and NASCAR Busch Grand National Series in two action-packed 150 lap events.
CarQuest presented the Featherlite Modifieds, giving race fans 150 laps of open-wheeled racing action. Two time Featherlite Modified Series champion Tony Hirschman of Nothampton, Pa., took the checkered flag of the CarQuest 150 after battling a power steering problem early in the race.
Hirschman led the race from the green flag, pulling his ATC Pontiac past first-place starter Eddie Flemke of Southington, Conn. and Mike Ewanitsko of N. Babaylon, N.Y. Ewanitsko put up quite a fight, racing Hirschman nose-to-tail until the ending laps. The 7th caution of the night bunched the field in the closing laps, ending the race in a crowd-approving five-lap shoot out.
"The car got a little wide there near the end," Hirschman said. "....I don't like to use up that much race track to try to win a race, but I had a good excuse tonight. I had no power steering in the car."
Tim Connolly of Endicott, N.Y. took advantage of Ewanitsko's high-line, stealing second, forcing Ewanitsko to a third-place finish. Charlie Pasteryak of Lisbon, Conn.,   cut his way through the 28-car field from his 13th-place start, crossing the line fourth. John Blewett III of Howell, N.J. rounded out the top five.
The Burnham Busch North 150 kicked-off the second half of the NASCAR Double Header at Jennerstown. Tracy Gordon of Strong, Me. showed his strength early, winning the Bud Pole Award with a lap over 95 miles per hour. Five laps after the green flag dropped, Gordon's Tic Tac Chevy assumed the lead, passing Martin Truex's of Mayetta, N.J. This two-car battle remained the theme throughout the race, with Gordon's and Truex's continual lead-swapping.
"It's a pleasure driving a car like that," Gordon said.
Truex tried to end his six-year losing streak, but Gordon proved to be too strong. They swapped the lead three times before the checkers fell on the 150-lap feature. Points leader Brad Leighton of Center Harbor, N.H. finished strong in third. Jamie Aube of Manchester, N.H. and Kelly Moore of Scarborough, Me. rounded out the top ten.
Local Jennerstown Late Model competitor Richard Mitchell of Bruceton Mills, W.Va. made his BGNN debut. Mitchell showed the BGNN regulars he was for real, starting seventh. Mitchell's debut was pure success, as he brought home a top-ten finish, eighth in his rookie start.
"Race fans could not have asked for a better show," Speedway General Manager Bob Duvall said. "Three hundred laps of bumper-to-bumper action made this Double Header a huge success."
Local racers took the evening off at Jennerstown, but Super Six Racing continues next week. The 30th Masonic District presents a full night of racing for only $7.50. Kids 12 and under are free. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. For more information call the Speedway Office at (814)629-6677.
