NASCAR WINSTON CUP STARS SHINE DURING
RACE OF CHAMPIONS ACTION AT JENNERSTOWN

Jennerstown-(July 17, 1999)-NASCAR Winston Cup stars, both past and present, were the stars of the show as they thrilled race fans with an extended personal autograph session, then brought them to their feet with 20 laps of match race competition. The four drivers included eventual match race winner Mike Skinner, Michael Waltrip, Hut Stricklin, and Harry Gant who came out of his racing retirement to compete at the Laurel Highlands Oval. All of the visiting racing celebrities were in complete agreement about their positive experience with the Speedway and the great fans in attendance. The race fans were just as excited to have the stars of NASCAR’s premier division come into their own backyard to visit.
The NAPA Auto Parts Late Model division got off to a rough start when pole sitter Jonathan Greenawalt got tagged from behind and was sent into the outside wall hard, causing a multi-car accident. Once the track had been cleared the action returned to full speed with Ryan Hemphill taking over the top spot for most of the first half of the race. Close behind the leader were Barry Awtey and eventual race winner Rich Mitchell. Mitchell worked the high groove to perfection as he took over the lead with a power move around Hemphill. Jeff Dunmyer came on strong in the second half of the race to finish in the runners up spot, with Barry Awtey coming home in third. Mark Cottone bounced back from the opening lap wreck to finish in fourth and Mark Smith rounding out the top five.
The Giant Eagle Pro Trucks were a great show once again as the win came down to a four truck battle with Todd Price taking home the checkered flag. The race lead was swapped, along with some paint, in the final laps with Bryan Thomas getting the second spot at the finish line. Nick Rosa came home in a close third with Josh Coughenour and George Englert finishing in fourth and fifth respectively.
As hard as it might be to imagine, the Street Stock event had the closest finish of the night as seven cars battled each other in the final laps, with Doug Shaulis getting to the finish line first in a battle that saw half of the field finish within a second or two of each other. Billy Mostoller had a great run to finish in second place, while George Nicola, Mike Bakalon, and Todd Knight finished under a blanket in third through fifth.
Tom Knight Jr. started his feature in fourth, but wasted little time getting to the front by lap three, then never looked back as he held off the remainder of the field en route to his fourth win of the season. Mark Flick also worked his way through the field to finish in second place, with Erik Skomo right behind in fourth. Marion Reno finished in fourth, while Ralph McBride came home in fifth.
It was Jason Fritz picking up his third win in Charger division action as he also used the outside groove to his advantage for the winning pass over Carl McCurdy, who came home in second. Mike Griffith avoided some early race spins to finish in third, while Tammy Smith finished fourth in her first ever race and Jesse King capped off the top five.
The Pennsylvania Legacy Cars had a few cautions to deal with but in the end it was Mike Smith coming home victorious for the seventh time this season. He outdistanced second place runner Brandon Manns, who finished in front of Rick Boyer, George Stockman, and Ed Boyer. Those drivers took home places third through fifth.
