Mark Smith Wins Late Model Feature At Jennerstown
Jennerstown,
Pa.-(July 10, 1999)-NAPA Auto Parts Late Model driver
Mark Smith of Meyersdale started Jennerstown Speedway's
50-lap feature first, and he remained there to score his
first feature win of 1999.
Smith won the feature by a fender over Richard
Mitchell of Bruceton Mills, W.Va. Smith and Mitchell
battled side by side, but Smith's Ford proved too much
for Mitchell's Chevy. "The 22 (Mitchell) was stronger,"
Smith said. 'We just had to do a little blocking on
him." Bobby Henry of Connellsville settled for third,
followed by Neil Brown of Acme. Point-leader Mark
Cottone of McKeesport rounded out the top five.
It was a career-first win for Giant Eagle Pro Truck
driver Bryan Thomas of Hooversville. Thomas and Todd
Price of Alum Bank battled nose to tail throughout the
25-lap feature. Price came home second, followed by
division point-leader Nick Rosa of Latrobe, Josh
Coughenour of Friedens and Paul Fess Jr
Mark Flick of Apollo made it three wins in seven
starts in the Grand American Modified division Saturday
night. Flick held off charging point-leader Tom Knight
Jr. of of Plum. Scott Skomo of Kittaning, Erik Skomo of
Ford City and Jim Nicole of West Mifflin rounded out the
top five.
From his eighth-place start, Street Stock driver
George T. Nicola of Pittsburgh made his way to the front
of the field, winning the feature over point-leader Doug
Shaulis of Somerset. Mel Wilt of Hollidaysburg came home
third, followed by Roger Onstead and Billy Mostoller,
both from Friedens.
Akron, Ohio native Mike Smith brought home his
sixth win of 1999 in the PA Legacy division, after
threading his way through numerous wrecks at
Jennerstown, Smith's dominating season continued,
winning by half a lap over his closest competitor
Branden Manns of White Oak. The rest of the top five
included Rick Bayer of Blairsville, Dave Holder of Irwin
and Bill Miller of New Wilmington.
Sam King of Mill Run made his first trip to Victory
Lane Saturday night in the Charger division. King's Ford
Thunderbird out-powered Jason Fritz of Jenner Cross
Roads, Mike Griffith of Berlin, Craig Stoner of Latrobe
and Jesse King of Mill Run.
Next weekend Jennerstown Speedway will host Winston
Cup Night, featuring a match race with Mike Skinner1
Michael Waltrip, Harry Gant and a fourth driver yet to
be named. All six divisions will also race. Tickets are
$15 in advance or $20 at the gate. All children 12 and
