RAIN
CANCELS RACING AT JENNERSTOWN, MITCHELL WINS NAPA LATE
MODEL CHAMPIONSHIP
Jennerstown, Pa.-(Sept.
4, 1999)-
Hurricane Dennis made its presence known in Southwestern
Pennsylvania Saturday, canceling the season finale at
Jennerstown Speedway due to rain showers.
With no rain-date
scheduled, track champions were crowned. Richard
Mitchell of Bruceton Mills, W.Va. claimed the NAPA Auto
Parts Late Model championship. In his fifteen starts,
Mitchell scored six feature wins, and he never finished
outside the top-10. Last year’s track champion Mark
Cottone of McKeesport finished in the second-place
points-position, 36 points behind Mitchell. Barry Awtey
of Jenners finished third, followed by Jeff Dunmyer of
Friedens, and David Houpt of Friedens rounded out the
top five.
"Mitchell had a great
season," Speedway Promoter Stan Lasky Jr. said. "It is a
shame we couldn’t get our season finale under way. All
of our track champions and every racer that competed
this year should be very proud."
Two feature wins and 14
top-five finishes were enough for Bryan Thomas of
Hooversville to claim the Giant Eagle Pro Truck
championship. Thomas finished 30 points ahead of
second-place Nick Rosa of Ligonier. Todd Price of Alum
Bank, Josh Coughenour of Somerset and George Englert of
Greenville settled for third, fourth and fifth,
respectively.
Grand American Modified
racer Thomas Knight Jr. of Plum visited Victory Lane six
times in 1999, and that was enough to take the track
championship honors in the division. Mark
Flick of Apollo finished
the season in second, followed by Erik Skomo of Ford
City, Marion Reno of White Oak and Scott Skomo of
Kittanning rounded out the top-five.
Doug Shaulis of Somerset
celebrated the Street Stock championship, with a
20-point advantage over George T. Nicola of Pittsburgh.
Billy Mostoller of Friedens ended the year in third.
Also finishing the year in the top-five were Mike
Bakalon of Friedens and John Stanko of Hooversville.
