Houpt Wins
3rd Annual Piney Lasky Memorial 200
Jennerstown, PA - May 29,
1999 - Dave
Houpt pulled off what may be considered the upset of the
early NASCAR Winston Racing Series season Saturday night
at Jennerstown Speedway, as he made a late race move
inside of perrenial champion Jeff Dunmyer, to win the
3rd Annual Piney Laskey Memorial 200 presented by
Kennametal.
Houpt started on the front row of this very prestigious
event, and after leading early on, maintained a top five
position throughout the entire race. Midway through the
first 100 lap segment Neil Brown let his presence be
known as he took over the point position, bringing along
Barry Awtey for the second spot. That was the way that
they finished the first half of the event, as all of the
drivers pitted for new tires and fuel. After five
minutes of adjustments, the field was reformed for the
restart, with Brown and Awtey heading the pack.
A spin in front of the leaders by Jerry Wisner collected
race leader Brown in a hard crash, which turned the lead
over to Awtey. He held the first spot until Jeff Dunmyer
paced his way to the front with less than fifty laps
remaining. It looked like the race was Dunmyer's to win
until a late race caution forced the field into a tight
restart. Houpt capitalized at the drop of the green
flag, and moved inside of Dunmyer. The two drivers
traded some paint, with Houpt taking over the lead and
on to the biggest win of his racing career. Dunmyer lost
second to Awtey and finished third, with Rich Mitchell
recovering from an early race spin to finish a
respectable fourth, just in front of Mark Cottone who
rounded out the top five.
Nick Rosa brought the entire group of Kennametal race
fans to their feet as he brought his Pro Truck
(sponsored by the same company) home to victory lane in
a 50 lap feature sponsored by Irwin RV of North
Huntington. Rosa put his bright yellow GMC racer out
front early, and was not seriously challenged until the
final laps when Bryan Thomas mounted a last minute
charge, but to no avail. Thomas finished a very close
second, with George Englert coming home in third. Todd
Price and Dave Brunell finished fourth and fifth
respectively in the extended lap feature.
It was Jennerstown Speedway win number one for Charger
division driver Craig W. Stoner as he held off Mike
Griffith at the finish line to earn a trip to victory
lane. Griffith battled a tough handling race car to earn
the runner-up position. Sam King drove a good race to
finish in third, with Carl McCurdy and Billy Bob Vasko
closing out the top five.
In the Pennsylvania Legacy Car feature it was Mike Smith
holding off a very determined defending race winner
Ricky Anderson. Recent ASA participant Jayme Bolkovac
beat out Rick Boyer for third, with George Stockman
coming home in fifth.
