FELVER WINS MAIN EVENT
SEASON OPENER AT JENNERSTOWN SPEEDWAY
Jennerstown, Pa - (May 15, 1999)-NAPA
Auto Parts Late Models took the evening off at
Jennerstown Speedway, but fans saw plenty of racing
action with the opening race of the MAIN EVENT Series
and five division of racing. Tim Felver of Owosso,
Michigan survived 11 caution flags to celebrate his
first MAIN EVENT Series' victory Saturday May 15th, as
Jennerstown hosted the series' 1999 opening race.
The MAIN EVENT
Series brought back Jennerstown legends like Tim Ice,
Glenn Gault and Fred
Campbell to retest
their racing skills in outlaw bodied, unrestricted Late
Models in a 100 lap feature. Fred
Campbell was the
fastest qualifying with a lap over 104 miles per hour.
Campbell fell out of the race early
after crashing in
turn one in the starting laps. Felver dominated early
on, but had Jennerstown's 1988
NASCAR Northeast
Regional Champion Glenn Gault at his bumper until the
checkered flag.
Gault won the battle
for second over Ted Johnson of Birch Run, Michigan.
Rounding out the top five were Scott Baker of Akron, OH
and John Cline of Canton. Two-time defending champ Tim
Ice rallied back to an eighth place finish after being
involved in an earlier caution.
"It was an honor to
host the MAIN EVENT's opening race," Track Promotor Stan
Lasky Jr. said. "Watching Gault, Ice and Campbell race
again was pure racing excitement."
Race Winner Tim
Felver said he really enjoyed racing at Jennerstown and
looks forward to making a future return.
"I think
(Jennerstown) is a beautiful facility," Felver said.
"And, I'd be glad to come back next year." Support
division racing included Giant Eagle Pro Truck Driver
Josh Coughenour taking his first vic tory of the season.
Coughenour was the class of the field, leading every lap
from his first place start. Thomas Knight Jr. of Plum,
Pa., started the Grand American Modified feature with
the points lead and will increase his lead after taking
his second win of the season from his fourth place
start.
Dominating the field
of 22 Street Stocks, Mike Davis of Somerset celebrated
his first vic tory of 1999. PA Legacy driver Rick
Anderson of Champion, Pa., found himself in unfamiliar
territory with his first-ever feature win at
Jennerstown.
Jennerstown's
amateur Charger division pulled double duty after last
week's rain halted the division's racing action. Carl
McCurdy of Bradenville survived a late race crash to win
the first feature. Jesse King took the victory in the
second Charger feature.
