DUNMYER TAKES PHOTO FINISH
WIN AT JENNERSTOWN SPEEDWAY
Jennerstown, PA-(June 5, 1999)- Jeff
Dunmyer had to be thankful that he did not push in his
front bumper during the Late Model feature event,
because that is what gave him the margin of victory over
Mark Smith Saturday night during Snyder of Berlin race
night at Jennerstown Speedway. The two cars actually
battled side-by-side for the final five circuits, with
Dunmyer first tracking down Smith, then using the low
groove to steadily advance his position. The two cars
battled all the way down to the wire, literally, as the
race was not decided until the two cars reached the
finish line.
Chris Coughenour paced the field early, but was
eventually overtaken by Smith, who held on to lead all
but the final circuit. It was a valiant effort by Smith,
who seemed to have a slight advantage running in the
outside groove, as he held off the Dunmyer charge down
to the final turn. The battle for third place was just
as exciting, as Neil Brown managed to take the position
over Barry Awtey by no more than a wheel length. Last
weeks big winner Dave Houpt came back to take home the
fifth place spot.
Todd Price was in the right place, at the right time to
take advantage of a slip by early race leader John
Mayola, and took over the top spot in the Giant Eagle
pro Truck feature event. In a reminder of last weeks
action, it was Bryan Thomas once again who mounted a
late race challenge, but once again came up just a
little short. George Englert also matched his third
place finish of a week ago, while last weeks winner Nick
Rosa came home in fourth. Aaron Will rebounded from
dropping out of his heat race to finish in the fifth
position.
The Street Stock division put on another one of their
bumper-to-bumper, action packed events with Doug Shaulis
holding off George Nicola for the win. The two top
runners made a great show with Nicola diving low into
the corners, and Shaulis pulling ahead down the
straight. Adam Kostelnik and Chris Deyarmin race hard
together in the final laps, with Kostelnik taking the
third position. Following close behind in fifth was
Billy Mostoller.
It was a good night for Grand American Modified point
leader Tom Knight Jr. as he worked through the front
half of the field to take the lead and the win. Mark
Flick put on a good battle through the field himself,
and finished the race a distant second, while Ken Skomo,
Ralph McBride, and Scott Skomo rounded out the top five.
The Pennsylvania Legacy Cars looked as though they were
going to finish in the exact same order as last week,
until race leader Mike Smith slipped on the final
restart to hand the lead and the win over to Ricky
Anderson. The second spot to Jayme Bolkovac, who
outdistanced Rick Boyer. George Stockman finished in
fourth, while Smith rebounded to take the fifth place.
The Charger division had four cars to start their
feature event, and put on a good show as Carl McCurdy
and Jason Fritz battled in the final laps, with Fritz
taking the checkered flag first. McCurdy was a close
second, with Mike Griffith finishing in third. Tom
Caster dropped out late in the race, and was credited
with fourth.
