Mark Cottone Takes First Win of 1999 at Jennerstown
Jennerstown, Pa.-(June
12, 1999)-Jennerstown Speedway's defending track
champion Mark Cottone of McKeesport, Pa., won the NAPA
Auto Parts Late Model feature presented by True Value
Saturday night.
Cottone worked his way through the 21-car field,
avoiding four cautions. By lap 18, Cottone took the lead
from Shawn Beam of Somerset, Pa., where he remained
until the checkered flag of the 50-lap event.
After recovering from an early incident with Ryan
Hemphill of Apollo, Pa., Jeff Dunmeyer of Friedens, Pa.,
raced back through the field to a second-place finish.
After winning the Late Model heat race earlier in the
evening, Barry Awtey of Jenners, Pa., lost the battle
for second, coming home third followed by Beam, and Brad
Smales of Sweet Valley, Pa.
Giant Eagle Pro Truck driver Nick Rosa of Ligonier
made it three-for-three this weekend. After winning both
truck features at Motordrome Speedway Friday, Rosa
passed George Englertof Greenville, Pa., for the lead
and the win at Jennerstown. Following Englert were
division-points-leader Bryan Thomas of Hooversville,
Pa., Todd Price of Alum Bank, Pa., and Aaron Will of
Altoona, Pa.
G.A. Modified division ended with first-time winner
Mark Flick of Apollo, Pa., in Victory Lane. Phil
Larcinese of Jefferson Hills, Pa., finished second.
Rounding out the top five were points-leader Tom Knight
Jr. of Plum, Pa., Marion Reno of White Oak, Pa., and
Erik Skomo of Ford City, Pa.
George T. Nicola of Pittsburgh, Pa., cut through the
field of Street Stocks, making up nine spots and taking
home his first win of the 1999 season. Finishing a close
second was Mike Bakalon of North Versailles, Pa.
Rounding out the top five were Billy Mostoller of
Friedens, Pa., Doug Shaulis of Somerset, Pa., and Mel
Wilt of Hollidaysburg, Pa.
PA Legacy champion Mike Smith of Akron, OH., is
defending his title in style, one again returning to
Victory Lane at Jennerstown. Mike Hemphill of Allison
Park, Pa., held off Rick Boyer of Blairsville, Pa., for
second, while Ricky Anderson of Champion, Pa., and Ed
Boyer of Indiana, Pa., rounded out the top five.
Jennerstown's amateur Charger division ended with
Craig Stoner of Latrobe, Pa., in Victory Lane for the
second time this season. Following Stoner to the finish
line were Carl McCurdy of Latrobe, Tom Caster of
Elizabeth, Pa., Jason Holder, and Jason Fritz of Jenner
Cross Roads, Pa.
Super Six Division drivers take next weekend off at
Jennerstown when the Busch Grand National North Series
and NASCAR Featherlite Modifieds make their way to
Western Pennsylvania for a NASCAR Double Header. Don't
miss the biggest NASCAR event in the area in over 30
years. Plus as an added bonus Busch Series driver Dave
Blaney will make a personal appearance and be available
for autographs. Gates open at 11:00 a.m. for a full day
of racing. Tickets are now available for $25 in advance
or $30 at the Gate. Children 12 and under are only $5.
