Mitchell Sweeps Weekend Winning At Jennerstown
Jennerstown, Pa.-(July 31, 1999)- The heat
and high humidity could not stop NAPA Auto Parts
Late Model driver Richard Mitchell of Bruceton
Mills, W.Va., Saturday night at Jennerstown
Speedway. Mitchell swept Late Model action this
weekend after winning Friday night at Motordrome
Speedway.
Dave Houpt of Friedens led the first 42 laps of the
50-lap feature, until Mitchell pulled side-by-side,
completing the pass in turn three on lap 43.
Mitchell remained out front for the final laps,
taking the checkered flag and his fourth win of 1999
at Jennerstown. Houpt held off Shawn Beam of
Somerset for second place. Rounding out the top five
were Brad Smales of Sweet Valley and Bobby Henry of
Connellsville.
In
the early laps of Giant Eagle Pro Truck action at
Jennerstown, Aaron Will of Altoona seemed to have
the car to beat. But by lap 17, Bryan Thomas of
Hooversville took the lead and never looked back to
score his second win of 1999.
Thomas was tied for first place with Nick Rosa of
Latrobe in Pro Truck points coming into the night's
event. Thomas secured the top spot after he and Rosa
tangled in turn four, sending Rosa into the front
stretch wall. Following Thomas to the checkers were
Todd Price of Alum Bank, Aaron Will of Altoona, Josh
Coughenour of Friedens and Paul Fess of Mt.
Pleasant.
Tom
Knight Jr. of Plum scored win number six in Grand
American Modified racing at Jennerstown. In turn
two, Knight dove inside of Ken Skomo of Ford City to
take the lead at lap five. Phil Larcinese of
Jefferson Hills gave Knight a battle for the win,
but he fell short, coming home second.
"I
could see Larcinese was getting closer, and I just
tried to get some distance," Knight said in Victory
Lane. Erik Skomo of Ford City secured a third-place
finish and rounding out the top five were Mark Flick
of Apollo and Scott Skomo of Kittaning.
It
was three-wide, bumper-to-bumper racing in the
Street Stock division as Doug Shaulis of Somerset
survived the close racing action to claim his fifth
win of the 1999 season. Mike Bakalon of North
Versailles watched his first win of 1999 slip away,
after leading until the white flag. Shaulis took the
lead with one to go, leaving Bakalon to finish
second. George T. Nicola of Pittsburgh, Todd Knight
of New Kensington and Tracy "Dink" Colarusso of West
Mifflin rounded out the top five.
The
PA Legacy 20-lap feature ended in a two-lap shoot
out, after a spin in turn two brought out the second
caution of the night. Mike Smith of Akron, OH,
jumped out to a sizeable lead on the restart. Smith
led the final two laps to take the win over Jayme
Bolkovac of Greensburg. Mike Hemphill of Allison
Park recovered from a mid-race spin to finish third,
followed by Rick Boyer of Blairsville and Bill
Miller of New Wilmington.
Jennerstown's amateur Charger division ended two
laps early with rain threatening. Jason Lasky of
Johnstown grabbed his first Charger win of 1999.
Lasky dominated the 1998 season, winning more
Charger features than any other driver. Chasing
Lasky to the checkers were Mike Griffith of Berlin,
Carl McCurdy of Latrobe, Sam King of Mill Run and
Brian Stephenson of North Versailles.
