GEORGE NICOLA WINS 50 LAP
STREET STOCK RACE ON CRAFTSMAN NIGHT AT JENNERSTOWN
JENNERSTOWN, PA-(August 28, 1999)-The Street Stock
division was featured in a 50 lap feature during
Craftsman Race Night at Jennerstown Speedway and
“Jammin” George Nicola used every inch of the track
to claim his fifth win of the season and the winners
purse of $800.00 for his efforts.
Nicola
took over the lead on lap 21 from pole sitter and
early race leader Adam Kostelnik, who tangled with
Chris Deyarmin to bring out the second caution of
the race. The first yellow flag came out when Robin
Rimmel tagged the outside wall and turned over on
his roof, sending a shower of sparks down the front
stretch. Rimmel was not injured in his crash, but
did not return to action. Once Nicola took the lead
his only challenge came from arch rival Doug Shaulis,
who could only get within a couple of car lengths
until a late race caution with two laps to go
bunched the field for a green-white-checkered
finish. The restart was only a formality for Nicola,
who held his ground for the win. Shaulis finished in
second, with Billy Mostoller, John Stanko, and Mike
Bakalon completing the top five.
In NAPA
Auto Parts Late Model action there were two winners
in victory lane as the NASCAR Winston Racing Series
feature division hosted Twin 30 Laps features. The
first feature was dominated by defending track
champion Mark Cottone, as he quickly asserted
himself as the man to beat. The battles raged
through the middle of the field as points leader
Rich Mitchell fought his way through the pack. The
shorter distance proved to be a big factor as other
cars were mired in traffic and did not have enough
time to make their regular moves. At the finish it
was Ryan Hemphill finishing a distant second, with
pole sitter Cary Todaro in third. Rich Mitchell
passed Barry Awtey in the final laps to take home
fourth, with Awtey right behind in fifth.
The
second 30 lap race was also highlighted by fierce
racing action as many drivers realized that there
was no time to wait. Jeff Dunmyer was the early race
leader, with Barry Awtey giving chase in second. The
man on a mission though was Mark Smith who used both
the inside and outside lines to charge into the top
spot. The chase was on from there but no other
driver had anything for Smith as he cruised to the
checkered flag for the win. Dunmyer finished in
second with Barry Awtey in third. Rich Mitchell and
Mark Cottone rounded out the top five.
The Pro
Stock Trucks were back to their usual side-by-side
racing ways as Todd Price held off a determined
George Englert for a hard fought win. The two trucks
battled tooth and nail throughout the closing laps
with Englert able to get along side of Price, even
leading one of the laps, but in the end it was Price
coming home first with Englert in a very close
second. Aaron Will beat out both Bryan Thomas and
Jim Hamilton to round out the top five.
Phil
Larcinese was back to his winning ways in the Grand
American Modified division, as he recorded his third
win in only eight starts. The race was slowed by a
few cautions, but the race was only for second as
Tom Knight Jr. beat out Scott Skomo for the spot.
Skomo finished in third, with Marion Reno rebounding
from an early spin to finish fourth and Ralph
McBride in fifth.
The
Pennsylvania Legacy Series had a showcase night as
female driver Jayme Bolkovac claimed her career
first feature win in a hotly contested event that
saw a three car battle for the win. Both Mike Smith
and Rick Boyer challenged hard for the win, but it
was Bolkovac’s night as she moved into the lead and
never looked back. Boyer finished in second with
Smith in third. George Stockman and Ed Boyer were
the other top five finishers.
