Jennerstown Prepares For NASCAR Double Header Featuring
Busch North Tour
Jennerstown, Pa.-(June 9, 1999)- If
you have put off coming to Jennerstown Speedway to see
some of the best NASCAR racing around, be sure to mark
your calendar for June 19th. The Speedway opens its
gates at 11:00 a.m. for a full day of NASCAR racing,
featuring both the Busch Grand National North Touring
division and the Featherlite Modified Series.
This Double Header will be the largest NASCAR event
Western Pennsylvanians have seen in over 30 years. As if
both touring divisions were not enough, local rising
Busch Series star Dave Blaney will make a personal
appearance along with Ms. Motorsports 1999, Jennifer
Olsen.
"We are very excited about bringing such a huge show
to our loyal race fans," Speedway General Manager Bob
Duvall said. "These two divisions always produce some of
the biggest future NASCAR stars. Drivers like Dale
Earnhardt, Steve Park, Jimmy Spencer and Ricky Craven
all have raced in these tours here at Jennerstown.
The CarQuest Featherlite Modified Series 150 will be
the first to run around the half-mile oval. The Modified
Series is NASCAR's oldest division and the only
open-wheeled touring division within the sanctioning
body. The series is open to eligible American-made,
steel bodied production passenger sedans. The race cars
must meet a minimum weight requirement of 2,610 pounds,
including the driver.
Last June the Modifieds competed at Jennerstown
resulting with Mike Stefanik of Coventry, RI., in
Victory Lane. Rounding out the top five were Mike
Ewanitsko of Long Island, NY.; Reggie Ruggiero of Rocky
Hill, Conn.; Tim Connolly of Endicott, NY.; and Tommy
Cravenho of Raynham, Mass. With the conclusion of the
1998 season, Stefanik made the jump to the NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series.
Pre-entry for the Modifieds is expected to exceed 30
cars. Twenty-eight will make the field through time
trials. The cars will race 150 laps for a purse just
below $50,000. The green flag for the CarQuest 150 will
be waved at 7:00 p.m.
Upon the CarQuest 150's completion, the Busch North
competitors will follow with the Burnham Boilers BGNN
150. The Busch teams make their way south to Jennerstown
from the Northeast for their eighth race of the season.
Jennerstown has hosted a BGNN event since the division
was first established in 1987.
At least 40 cars are expected to attempt qualifying,
but only 28 will make the starting field. Drivers will
compete for $73,875, the largest purse ever to be paid
in Western Pennsylvania. Busch North cars are nearly
identical to the NASCAR Busch Series cars. Unlike the
Busch Series, Busch North race cars must race with
McCreary bias-ply tires, and roof flaps are optional.
Stafanik, Modifed race winner, celebrated for a
second time in Victory Lane at Jennerstown after winning
the BGNN 150 in late August of 1998. Chasing Stefanik to
the checkers were Brad Leighton of Center Harbor, NH.;
Mike Olson of North Haverhill, NH.; and Denny Doyle of
Plymouth, Conn. Stefanik went on to win both the
Modified championship and the Busch North championship
last year.
No race fan should miss this all-day racing
extravaganza. Gates will open for the NASCAR Double
Header at 11:00 a.m., and time trials are set to begin
at 3:30 p.m. Ticket orders are now being taken. Save by
ordering tickets in advance for only $25. Gate price
will be $30, and kids under 13 enter for only $5. To
order your tickets or for further information, call
