10,000
PLUS FANS WITNESS ACTION AT JENNERSTOWN
Jennerstown, PA (July 11, 1998) - Race fans were
the real winners Saturday night at the Jennerstown
Speedway as over 10,000 rabid race fans packed the
Laurel Highlands Oval to watch six exciting divisions of
NASCAR Winston Racing Series action during Local
Chevrolet Dealers "Fan Appreciation" race night.
Mike Bakalon of North Versailles, PA made it a great
night for himself, as well as the Candlighters, a non
profit organization which helps kids with cancer.
Before the races Bakalon announced that he and his
teammate Adam Kostelnik would be donating ALL of their
race winnings to the Candlighters. Then The Money Store
Street Stocks took to the track 21 strong for their
double points event, and most of them stayed that way
through the majority of the race. Dan Pope lead the
early laps with pressure applied from Bill Mostoller and
Chris Deyarmin. Meanwhile it was Mike Bakalon who was
the man on a mission, as he sliced and diced his way
around the front runners, bringing last week's winner
Doug Shaulis along with him. By halfway it was Bakalon
taking the lead, with six different race cars battling
together for second through fifth. This allowed Bakalon
to cruise away with the win, with Chris Deyarmin, Bill
Mostoller, Dan Jubic, and Neil Kush Jr. untangling
themselves to finish second through fifth in one of the
best races of the year.
In Giant Eagle Pro Stock action it was Aaron Will taking
his first win of the season as he paced the rest of the
field to the checkered flag. Carl Travarrow led early,
but fell to the hard charge of Will. Shawn Beam and
Scott Coughenour also got by before the checkered flag
fell. Trevarrow finished in fourth, with George Englert
coming home in fifth.
Mark Flick returned once again to victory lane in the
NAPA Grand American Modified feature race. He had a
tough time working through the field, then an even
tougher time taking the lead away from Rich Stiffler,
who had a great race and fought hard for his second
place finish. Jim Nicola had yet another fine race and
finished in third, while early race leader Marion Reno
Jr. along with Ralph McBride followed home in fourth and
fifth.
The Irwin RV Legacy Car Series had another great race
with only one caution during their 25 lap feature race.
Mike Smith took home another win as he stepped out to
the front past early leader Jayme Bolkovac who raced
close all the way to the checkered flag. Rick Boyer
attempted to move into second over Bolkovac on a number
of occasions, but had to settle for third place. Ricky
Anderson and Mark Poole battled to the finish line for
the fourth and fifth place positions.
The Days Inn Chargers put on a great showing once again
as Jason Lasky used the laid back approach to capture
another win. Carl McCurdy paced the four car field
early, as Lasky worked by both Sam King and Mike
Griffith to take over second. McCurdy and Lasky battled
back and forth with Lasky finally taking over the lead
and the win. McCurdy finished second, with King and
Griffith in third and fourth.
The final feature race of the night was almost as
explosive as the Speedway fireworks following the
finish. Rich Mitchell ran a superb race as he placed
himself in the right positions to pass one after another
top contender. Snooky Williams had the early advantage,
and raced well until Mitchell came along. Then the two
ran side-by-side for a number of laps until Mitchell
took over the lead, much to the delight of the large
number of his Bruceton Mills, WV fans. Jeff Dunmyer
charged hard from his twelfth place starting spot to
finish a close second. Snooky Williams held on for
third, with Bob Arsenberger finishing in fourth and Mark
Cottone taking home fifth.
