Rich Mitchell Gets Double Win At Jennerstown

Jennerstown, PA- (August 8, 1998) - Richard Mitchell from Bruceton Mills, WV topped off a great weekend of racing as he won both the Chevrolet Late Model division feature race, as well as the 'Dash for Cash' during Snyders of Berlin race night at Jennerstown Speedway.  Including his winnings for both Friday and Saturday race wins, Mitchell rang up the cash register to a total of over $9,000 dollars.
The nights feature race was as exciting as they get, as Mitchell and Mark Cottone both had to work through heavy traffic up front, then dueled in the latter stages of the 50 lap race.  Mitchell proved to be too tough to tame as he controlled a last lap restart over Cottone for the one car length win.  Following behind the front two were Snooky Williams in third, with Mark Smith and Barry Awtey rounding out the top five.
In the 'Dash for Cash' it was an option for all teams to either remove the engine restrictor plate, or leave it in place.  All but one of the teams in the dash (Snooky Williams) elected to remove the plates and gain in horsepower.  Mitchell wasted no time in working his way to the front position, with Cottone once again in hot pursuit.  The two drivers seemed to have things well in control, using the additional power to gain an advantage over the rest of the pack.  As the laps wound down, Mitchell maintained a comfortable lead, which he kept to the checkered flag.  Cottone finished in second, with Barry Awtey, Marty Edwards, and Snooky Williams finishing the Dash third through fifth.
In the Giant Eagle Pro Stock/Truck feature it was yet another round of accidents that thinned the field.  After two leaders were knocked out of competition, it was George Englert who took command and led the field to the finish line.  Todd Price came home in second, while Carl Trevarrow placed third.  Mike Merringer and Tom Mulhollen completed the top five.
Mark Flick proved that he has the ability to race close, as well as win races as he had to battle with race leader Marion Reno Jr. and Tom Knight Jr. in a three way battle through the second half of the NAPA Grand American Modified race.  When the dust settled it was Flick enjoying the fruits of victory lane, as Knight captured second, with Reno finishing third.  Dave Brunell and Mark Calvert rounded out the top five.
In The Money Store Street Stock race it was another tight battle between Mike Bakalon and Doug Shaulis, who each took turns trying to pry the lead away from Scott Skomo.  On a late race restart it was Shaulis who took over the lead, with Bakalon staying a close second at the finish line.  Chris Deyarmin captured third, with Adam Kostelnik and Dave Marrow both clearing Skomo to finish in fourth and fifth respectively.
It was Mike Smith once again taking control of the Irwin RV Legacy Car feature event.  Smith started on the front row and never looked back as he stretched out his lead, until a late race caution bunched the field.  Second place Rick Boyer applied pressure on the restart, but could not seriously challenge for the win.  Following Smith and Boyer to the line were Mark Poole, Robbie Young, and George Stockman to complete the top five.
The Days Inn Chargers race was a battle of the sexes, as Dick Smith had to battle with Janet York in the final laps.  Smith was able to get by York for his first ever stock car win, with York finishing in second.  Carl McCurdy, Joe Rusky, and Sam King fought hard to finish in third through fifth.
