JENNERSTOWN, PA (July
28)…Mark Smith took the checkered for his 2nd time this
season as he was able to hold off the #75 of Barry Awtey to take the
victory in the Super Late Model feature. After having mechanical
problems on the #94 of Smith, it looked as if it was going to be a long
night for crew of the 94 car. Due to a broken spindle after running hot
laps, Smith failed to take his spot in his scheduled heat race. A
victory was probably the last thing the 94 team thought they were going
to have Saturday night.
Starting
in the front of the pack was the #10 of Mark Rend and the #0 of Larry
Behanna. At the wave of the green flag, it was a survival of the fastest
as only a few rows back, was the American Dream, the #23 of Dusty
Rhoads, the #5h of Matt Howsare and the #59 of Kyle Martel while the
past 2007 feature winners were caught up further back in the pack.
After a
bad wreck at Motordrome Speedway earlier in the season, the #59 of Kyle
Martel had been unable to get his car back to how it was on June 2nd
when he took his first feature win for the 2007 season. Now, several
weeks later after 2 DNF’s and three 6th place finishes, Martel must have
figured out what the problem was. It did not take long for Martel, who
started 5th, to make his way to the front of the pack as by
lap 2 he was out in clean air leading the field of 15 Super Late Models.
Yet, Kyle
wasn’t able to hold onto that lead long as a 5 car wreck on the front
stretch on lap 7 took out the #23 of Dusty Rhoads, #0 Larry Behanna, the
#82 of Jason Lasky, the #66 of Todd Price and the #55 of Matt Barndt.
For the restart, the #75 of Awtey, #95 of Garry Wiltrout and the #94 of
Smith were on Martel’s tail anxiously awaiting to get take the lead off
the 59. It was Awtey who was the first to make it past Martel to take
the lead, while not to much after was Smith able to get past the 59
also. Another late race caution caused by mechanical problems for the
#95 of Wiltrout, put Smith and Awtey side by side seeing who had the
better car as they raced to the checkered.
In the
Somerset Trust Company Street Stock division, Jason Holder was able to
break the Kostelnik streak as he took his first victory Saturday night.
It looked as if it was going to be an interesting night for the Street
Stock as a wreck going into the first turn of the race brought the field
to caution. Holder starting 2nd was able to keep his place in
the front as a 2nd caution caused by the #25 of Dave
Tavormina brought out the yellow. As Adam Kostelnik pushed his way
through the pack from starting 8th, Holder was able to hold
off Kostelnik to take the win.
In the
Budweiser Hobby Stocks, it was a normal night as the #27 of Steve Long
was able to push his way up from starting 7th to take the
victory for the 6th time this season. Caution was brought out
only once in the 15 lap feature as the #78 of Josh Zerfoss hit the wall
hard in the back stretch, bringing emergency crews onto the track to
care for the injured driver. Long is currently 2nd in the
point standings only 28 points behind points leader Eugene Zerfoss.
This
Saturday, Automotive Resources proudly sponsors the “ARI Challenge 100.”
The Jennerstown Speedway Super Late Models will compete in a 100 lap
feature race instead of the normal 40 lap feature. Along with the
extended Super Late Model Feature, the Budweiser Hobby Stocks and the
Somerset Trust Company Street Stocks will compete in their normal weekly
feature. Admission is just $15.00 for adults, children 7-12 are admitted
for $5.00 and kids 6 & under are free.
