Smith Wins the ARI Super Late Model Challenge 100

JENNERSTOWN, PA (August 4)…Things were hot on Saturday as Automotive Resources hosted the ARI Super Late Model Challenge 100. The race was a battle of the best even though the first 50 laps were plagued with caution.  The first caution came out on lap one from a spin by the 23R of Dusty Rhoads.

The next caution came out 8 laps later when the newcomer #23 of Jimmy Weller and the #10 of Mark Rend got into each other causing the two cars to spin. The 20 cars participating in the 100 lap challenge didn’t make it three times around after the restart before the caution flag waved for the third time brought out by the #82 of Jason Lasky.

With #94 of Mark Smith and #59 of Kyle Martel one and two, it wasn’t long before the two cars caught the back of the field passing the #93 of Chris Roberts on lap 22. On lap 43, caution number four came out with a spin by the 82 of Lasky. On the restart, the 94 and 10 didn’t even make it off of turn 1 before the #94 of Mark Smith spun his car making a close encounter with the outside wall.

The caution flag was shown for the sixth time on lap 48 when the previous 100 lap winner earlier this season, the #99 of Robby Marhefka, blew a tire. The seventh and last caution of the 100 lap race came out with a spin in turn 2 by the #95 of Garry Wiltrout.

It was a close race as the top five cars were in close range of each other to the end.  It would be a test of who had the better car and who would get caught up in the lapped traffic that would set apart 1st and 2nd place. The #94 of Smith, who started fifth, was able to stay up front throughout all of the early race cautions to take the checkered for the second week in a row and his third time this season.

For the fourth time this season, Andrew Kostelnik took the victory in the Somerset Trust Company Street Stock feature race. On the restart after a caution brought out by the #08 of Bobby Young, Kostelnik was able to get around the #91 of Lauren Butler who had been out in front for the first nine laps of the feature race.

There was a new face in victory lane this Saturday in the Budweiser Hobby Stock division. That face was that #29 of Clifford Zerfoss. The dominant cars so far this season have been that #27 of Steve Long and Clifford’s brother, the #23 of Eugene Zerfoss. Clifford who started second behind his brother Eugene was able to take the lead on lap 2 and stay out in front to take the checkered.

This Saturday Jennerstown Speedway will host Jennerstown’s “Night at the Races.” For the fourth time this year, the Minicups will participate in a feature race along with the weekly three divisions of short track racing action.
