CHRISTOPHER WINS
JENNERSTOWN NASCAR WHELEN MODIFIED EVENT
JENNERSTOWN, PA (June 17) … Ted Christopher didn’t have a ride two days
before the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event at Jennerstown Speedway,
but when the checkered flag flew in the Wheeler Bros. 100 the
Plainfield, Conn. driver pulled his Eddie Whelan owned back-up car into
victory lane.
“Its
really been a ‘dull’ week for me,” laughed Christopher. FBI agents had
earlier confiscated his entire race team that was owned by Jim Galante,
and Christopher wasn’t even planning on racing at Jennerstown.
“Eddie
called me on Thursday evening and offered his back-up car to me, and
talked me into coming,” said Christopher. “I decided to give it a shot,
because I was second in points coming into this event.”
Actually
Christopher only led two-laps of the century grind, as Eddie Flemke Jr.
dominated the first 97 circuits, and looked like a sure winner until a
late race caution closed the field. That placed a fast closing Tony
Hirschnan, and Christopher on his tail on the restart. Coming into Turn
4 on the 97th go round Christopher dove to the inside of
Hirschman, and then made contact with Flemke, sending him up the race
track.
“I had a
little bump and run with Eddie, but, hey, I was faster,” Christopher
said. Flemke saw it another way. “Up until the last two laps we were
racing with gentlemen,” Flemke said. “The last two laps I wasn’t racing
with a gentleman. If you live by the sword, you will eventually die by
the sword.” Second place finisher Hirschman was also not complimentary
of Christopher’s driving tactics. “I certainly had the fastest car
tonight, but I’m not going to do slide jobs and knock another guy up in
the marbles. I don’t race like that.”
Eric
Beers was fourth, with Donny Lia fifth.. Jerry Marquis, Chuck Hossfield,
Todd Szsegedy, Doug Coby, and Jon McKennedy rounded out the top-10
finishers.
In NASCAR
Dodge Weekly Series competition Mark Poole collected his second Courtesy
Suzuki 40-lap super late model win of the year, easily outdistancing
Barry Awtey, Garry Wiltrout, Kyle Martel and Rick Boyer in the process.
Poole
took the front spot from Awtey on Lap 20, and never looked back, opening
up a full straightaway margin of victory.
Dusty
Rhoads dominated another crash-marred WJAC-TV late model contest leading
all but three ofv the 25-lap feature event. Andrew Wylie was second,
trailed by Mel Wilt, Snooky Williams, and Dink Colarusso.
Adam
Kostelnik pulled off the hat trick in the Advance Auto Parts street
stock, winning his third consecutive 20-lap feature ahead of Bill
Ashton, Phil Grubbs, Roger Onstead, and Bobby Young.
Eugene
Zerfoss found the winners circle for the first time, powering to a win
in the hobby stock class over Steve Long, Deidre Petrie, Doug Long, and
Teodore Gibala Jr..
