MARTEL
BIG WINNER IN JENNERSTOWN ACTION
JENNERSTOWN, PA (June 10) … Kyle Martel declared that he will be a
serious title contender at Jennerstown Speedway this season, as the
Lebanon teenager drove to a dominant win in Saturday evenings Craftsman
Tool sponsored 40-lap Courtesy Suzuki super late model feature event
during NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action at the half-mile paved Somerset
County oval.
Driving
a Chevrolet ‘crate’ engine-powered car, Martel took the lead on Lap 10,
diving under early leader Paul Urso. Martel briefly surrendered the top
spot to Mark Smith following a caution on the sixteenth circuit. Martel
regained the lead two laps later and proceeded to pull away to a full
straightaway margin of victory.
“Tonight
was a terrific night,” said Martel from victory lane. “The car was fast
and the feature showed we had a good handling race car. We tweaked on
the car all night trying to get more forward bite, but I have to credit
my crew… they got it right when it counted.”
Smith
finished second after a close battle with Mark Poole, while Barry Awtey
and Rick Boyer rounded out the top five. Low cost ‘crate’ engine cars
finished first, fourth and fifth.
Finishing
sixth through tenth were: Todd Goble, Mark Cottone, Wiltrout, Jayme Beck
and Todd Price.
Dink
Colarusso held on to win a crash marred 25-lap WJAC-TV late model main
event. After running in a tight four car pack the West Mifflin-driver
won his first ever division feature by dodging a melee on Lap 17, when
the other three contenders – Wade Champeno, Mel Wilt, and Chris Brink –
spun in the third corner. Andrew Wylie garnered the runner-up slot ahead
of Champeno, Dan Brink and Wilt.
During
the late model preliminary event Matt Howsare of Everret spun his entry
entering Turn 1, and was hit by several other cars. Howsare, who was
conscious following the accident, was extricated from the car by
Jennerstown Fire Dept. rescue personnel and flown by Med Star ambulance
to Conemaugh Health Center in Johnstown. Howsare was listed in stable
condition and was admitted to the intensive care unit for further
evaluation.
Adam
Kostelnik won his second consecutive Advance Auto Parts street stock
contest with a 12th lap pass of Roger Onstead. Onstead
managed to hold on to second place, trailed by Phil Grubbs, Bill Ashton
and Andrew Kostelnik.
Hobby stock honors went to
Greensburg’s John Steeley, who out drove last weeks feature winner
Doug Long to annex his second victory of 2006. Eugene Zerfoss was
third, with Larry Dunmyer fourth and Theodore Gibala Jr. finishing
fifth.
