SMITH WINS ON JENNERSTOWN ADVANCE AUTO PARTS NIGHT

JENNERSTOWN, PA (July 1) … Meyersdale’s Mark Smith ended his dry spell at Jennerstown Speedway Saturday evening before a crowd of over 6,000 fans, by driving his Richter Motorsports entry to victory in the Courtesy Suzuki 40-lap super late model feature in NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action.

Smith, who was the winningest driver in 2005 at the Somerset County paved half-mile oval, started on the pole, and led the entire distance while beating back several challenges in the caution-marred Advance Auto Parts Fan Appreciation Night contest.

“This thing was pushing like a pig,” Smith said from Victory Lane. “I certainly didn’t have the best car out there tonight, but everything just went our way. We have been working on our new car and ignoring this old girl. I think we’ll start paying more attention to her from now on.”

Kyle Martel and Jason Mignogna applied the early pressure on Smith, but in the end it was Mark Poole and Canadian invader Pete Vanderwyst who made several bids for the top spot. Poole was able to poke a fender under Smith several times, but was unable to muster enough speed to complete the pass.

Mignogna recovered to finish fourth, after being sent to the rear of the field for rough driving. Will Thomas rounded out the top-five. Barry Awtey, Mark Cottone, Rick Boyer, Todd Price and Paul Urso were sixth through tenth.

Dusty Rhoads drove to his third triumph in the 25-lap WJAC-TV late model main by diving under leader Chris Brink with five laps remaining in the contest. Brink held on for second, ahead on Andrew Wylie, Todd Corson and Mel Wilt.

Adam Kostelnik continued his domination of the Advance Auto Parts street stock class, winning his fourth consecutive feature over Todd Knight, Roger Onstead, Scott Bowman and Phil Grubbs.

Stoystown’s Brandon Bittner captured his first hobby stock checkered flag following a shoot out with second place finisher Steve Long. Eugene Zerfoss was third, trailed by Clifford Zerfoss and John Steeley.
