AWTEY TAKES JENNERSTOWN KIDS DAY FEATURE

JENNERSTOWN, PA (Aug. 5) … Barry Awtey reeled in early race leader Mark Smith two laps from the finish in the 40-lap Courtesy Suzuki super late model main event at Jennerstown Speedway to pick up his first feature victory of the season in NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action.

Smith had led the contest since Lap 8, after inheriting the front spot when early pacesetter Robby Marhefka and Mark Poole both took hard hits into the third turn wall, bringing out a red flag. Poole’s car caught fire briefly from a ruptured oil line. Neither driver was injured in the melee.

On the ensuing restart Smith jumped ahead of Todd Goble and built up a full straightaway lead over Goble and Awtey, who battled for the runner-up position for five circuits.

Awtey began closing the gap, as Smith’s car began to tighten and push up the track exiting the corners. The Jenners veteran finally made the winning pass coming off the fourth turn on Lap 38.

“I knew I had to go like heck to catch Mark (Smith) when he had such a big lead,” Awtey said from Victory Lane. “I ran it for all it was worth, and we just lucked out. When I saw him slip up high coming off of four, it was just like piranha’s smelling blood.”

Blairsville’s Rick Boyer settled for a distant third, while Goble and Garry Wiltrout rounded out the top-five.

Dusty Rhoads grabbed the lead from Snooky Williams eight laps into the WJAC-TV late model 25-lap feature, and then cruised to an easy win.

Andrew Wylie moved into second late in the contest, and then held off Mel Wilt, Chris Brink and Todd Corson.

Adam Kostelnik saw his Advance Auto Parts street stock win skein stopped at seven, as an early race skirmish sent him to the pit area.

With Kostelnik on the sidelines Scott Bowman battled past Bill Ashton on Lap 15, then held off the charge of Todd Knight to annex his first ever checkered flag in the class. Ashton finished third ahead of Tom Knight Sr. and Jonathan Hileman.

Deidre Petrie captured her first hobby stock feature of the year after re-passing Steve Long on the white flag lap to regain the top spot. Petrie had led the entire contest until getting caught in traffic on the 12th lap, which permitted Long to take command.

Long held on to finish second over Doug Long, Scott McCall and Eugene Zerfoss..
