THOMAS
WINS JENNERSTOWN MAARA 100 / BIFFLE VICTORIOUS IN RACE OF CHAMPIONS
JENNERSTOWN, PA (Aug. 12) … Ohio invader Will Thomas made a late race
charge in Saturday evenings Mid-Atlantic Asphalt Racing Alliance (MAARA)
super late model 100-lap contest at Jennerstown Speedway and came up the
big winner in the third leg of the five-race championship series.
In the
Race of Champions exhibition contest Greg Biffle, the winningest driver
in 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup action, bested Ken Schrader, Kenny Wallace and
Martin Truex Jr in front of a standing room only crowd of over 8,000
fans. Dale Earnhardt Jr served as the guest flagman for the contest.
Thomas, a
regular campaigner at the Lake Erie Speedway, who began his racing
career at Jennerstown in the PA legacy class, took the lead from Pete
Vanderwyst on Lap-78, after coming from the sixth starting spot in the
33-car starting field.
“This win
was awesome.. our crew worked so hard on this car all afternoon,” said
an ecstatic Thomas from Victory Lane. “I just love 100-lap races; I’m
not much of a 40-lap sprint driver. Early in the race we couldn’t get
the restarts to go our way, so we decided to save our equipment for the
end.”
Vanderwyst had gotten past Mark Poole two laps earlier on a restart, but
the Canadian pilot was unable to fend off Thomas., and was forced to
settle for a close second. Poole had led the first 75 circuits of the
century grind.
Current
Jennerstown point leader Mark Smith finished third ahead of Barry Awtey
and Glenn Gault Jr. who came into the race leading the MARRA point
standings.
Rounding
out the top-10 were Poole, Rick Boyer, Kyle Martel, Bobby Henry and Rick
Miller.
Mark Rend
captured his second WJAC-TV late model division victory, leading all
20-laps to defeat Mel Wilt, Snooky Williams, Chris Brink, and Andrew
Wylie.
Phil
Grubbs was a first time winner in the Advance Auto Parts street stock
25-lap feature event, outrunning Richard Nicola, Adam Kostelnik, Bobby
Young and last week’s feature winner Scott Bowman.
Scott
McCall returned to the winners circle in the hobby stock class, besting
Eugene Zerfoss, Steve Long, John Steeley and Teddy Gibala.
Paul
Breeden of Bethesda, MD won the 15-lap mini-cup finale
