BOYER HOPES TO KEEP
JENNERSTOWN MOMEMTUM
JENNERSTOWN, PA (May
30) … Rick Boyer is raising a number of eyebrows in early season NASCAR
Dodge Weekly Series action at Jennerstown Speedway.
The
veteran Blairsville driver has two second place finishes under his belt,
and is the current point leader in the Courtesy Suzuki super late model
division at the half-mile paved Somerset County oval going into this
Saturdays Highland Harley-Davidson sponsored event.
“Boyer’s early season
success hasn’t come as a surprise to anyone that has a stop watch in
their hand,” said speedway General Manager Larry Mattingly. ”Rick has
totally dominated our late model class, which competes with less
powerful engines, for the past two years.
“He has turned lap
speeds comparable to the super class, and with more horsepower under the
hood this season, he is among the leaders.”
Perhaps the most
surprising factor in Boyer’s early success is that he racing one of the
cost effective ‘crate’ engines, a power plant that retails for one
fourth of what the higher priced custom-built racing engines cost
competitors.
“We felt going into
the season that the two different engine styles would be equal in
performance,” Mattingly said. “Thus far our projections have been on
target.” Crate and custom engine powered cars have split the two
feature victories, and crate motors swept the first three finishing
positions in the most recent feature contest.
Is Boyer a serious
contender for track championship honors? “Absolutely,” concluded
Mattingly. “Last season Rick lost the late model championship because he
missed several races following an opening day crash. This year Rick is
taking no chances, as he is putting the finishing touches on a new car.”
Previous feature
winners Mark Poole and Tim Bainey Jr., along with Kyle Martel, Barry
Awtey and Mark Smith are also considered to be top contenders for the
super late model checkered flag.
The WJAC-TV late
models, Advance Auto Parts street stocks, and hobby stocks are also on
the 12-event race card.
In addition to the
racing action the World Stunts FMX tour will be making a special
appearance at the Laurel Highlands entertainment complex. Showcasing
some of the top freestyle motocross riders in the nation, the team of
riders will launch an awesome air assault exhibition, as they jump their
motorcycles from a mechanical take-off ramp and soar 85 feet in the air.
As part of the
Highland Harley-Davidson promotion any fan riding a motorcycle to the
race event Saturday will be admitted free of charge.
Admission is $8.00 for
adults, while students with a valid high school ID will be admitted for
$4.00. Kids, age 12 and under, are free of charge.
Spectator gates open
at 5:00 PM, with the first race set to begin at 6:00.
