JENNERSTOWN
SPEEDWAY OPENER … MAY 6
JENNERSTOWN, PA ( May
3, 2006) … Jennerstown Speedway will open for its 76th season
of action this Saturday evening (May 6) with a big ‘Halloween in May’
Fan Appreciation Night attraction.
The NASCAR-sanctioned
half-mile paved oval will feature a four division race card, highlighted
by the Courtesy Suzuki super late models, WJAC-TV late models, Advance
Auto Parts street stocks, and the Fox’s Pizza Den hobby stocks.
“Based on our two
pre-season practice sessions, we’re looking for a blockbuster season,”
said track General Manager Larry Mattingly. “Fan and competitor interest
has never been at a higher level.”
With the introduction
of the cost-effective crate engines in the super late model class the
competition factor in the division should be at a fever pitch, as a
number of new entries have thrown their hat in the ring.
Defending champion
Tommy Beck has informed track officials that he will not return to
defend his 2005 title. Among the leading contenders to fill the void is
Meyersdale’s Mark Smith, who was last seasons leading feature winner
with six checkered flags. Also expected to be in the title chase are
former track champions Barry Awtey (Jenners) and Garry Wiltrout
(Somerset), along with 2005 third-place finisher Mark Poole.
Dusty Rhoads and
Richard Nicola will return to defend their championship honors in the
late model and street stock categories.
Deidre Petrie, Jeff
Zillweger, Teddy Gibala and Eugene Zerfoss are the top contenders for
the hobby stock crown, as neither defending champion Gregory Lohr or
runner-up Cindy Shaulis will be returning.
Halloween in May will
highlight Fan Appreciation Night activities. Everyone coming to the
track in full costume will be admitted to the event free of charge.
Additionally, there will be trick or treat and a gold rush for kids,
along with a clown, face painting and free balloon hats. A free magnet
schedule giveaway is on tap for adults.
Admission price is
$4.00 for all seats. Spectator gates open at 5:00 PM, with racing set to
begin at 6:00.
