HOWSARE’S CONDITION
IMPROVES
JENNERSTOWN,
PA (June 12) … Injured Jennerstown Speedway late model driver Matt
Howsare continues to make improvement at Johnstown’s Memorial Medical
Center following an accident during last Saturday’s NASCAR Dodge Weekly
Series program at the Somerset County oval.
The Everett teenager
has been transferred from the intensive care unit into the orthopedic
ward.
“The doctors tell me
that I suffered a twisted spinal cord in the crash, which caused the
left side of my body to be numb,” Howsare said from his hospital room.
”The numbness is gone now, and they had me walking last night. Hopefully
I’ll be released on Tuesday.”
Howsare’s car spun in
Turn 1 during the late model preliminary event and was T-boned by a car
driven by Lauren Butler. Howsare was extricated by Jennerstown Fire
Department rescue personnel, and transported to the Conemaugh Health
System facility by Med Star air ambulance.
“I was racing side by
side for the lead going into the turn,” Howsare said. “My left side
tires got under the line where the track flattens out, and unloaded the
chassis, which caused me to spin. It was just one of those things.”
Doctors have
recommended that Howsare wear a neck brace for the next four weeks.
“The car is pretty
torn-up,” Howsare said, “so we might have to sit out most of this season
anyway. I plan to race again. I’ll be back.”
