JENNERSTOWN ‘RACE OF CHAMPIONS’ FIELD
JENNERSTOWN, PA (Aug.
3) … Rising NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Martin Truex Jr. has filed to
become the fifth entry in the 2006 ‘Race of Champions’ (ROC) event at
Jennerstown Speedway on Sat. Aug. 12.
Truex
will join fellow DEI team mate Dale Earnhardt Jr., Greg Biffle, Kenny
Wallace and Ken Schrader in the ‘Race of Champions’ contest. Truex,
Biffle, Wallace and Schrader will drive in two eight-lap exhibition
races, while Earnhardt Jr. will serve as the flagman for the event. All
five drivers will participate in a pre-race autograph session.
A second-generation
NASCAR driver, Truex began his racing career at age 11 by running
go-karts, and moved into the open-wheel modified class at Wall Stadium
in 1998. He was an instant success, finishing sixth in points and
winning a feature during his rookie season of competition.
Two years later Truex
made the big jump to the NASCAR BUSCH North series, where he finished 12th
in points and second in rookie points. He also picked up a victory at
New Hampshire International Speedway in only his eighth series start.
Truex continued
campaigning his family-owned operation on the BUSCH North circuit over
the next three seasons, compiling an outstanding record, which included
four wins and numerous pole awards.
The New Jersey pilot
received his big break in 2003 running a part-time NASCAR BUSCH series
schedule for Chance 2 Motorsports, which was co-owned by Earnhardt Jr.
and Teresa Earnhardt, widow of the late seven-time Nextel Cup champion
Dale Earnhardt. Truex compete in only 10 races, but finished with
consecutive second place finishes at Rockingham and Homestead Speedways.
Truex was elevated to
full time BUSCH series status in 2004 and responded by garnering the
championship with six wins in 32 starts. He finished 10th or
better on 20 other occasions while starting on the pole seven times.
Truex Jr. duplicated
the BUSCH title in 2005, and the results were almost as sweet. He again
captured six events. In all, he collected 15 top-five finishes (seven
more in the top 10) and three Bud Pole awards.
For
the 2006 season Truex has been promoted to the Nextel Cup ranks where he
is wheeling the No. 1 Dale Earnhardt Inc. / Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet
