SMITH Captures
jennerstown feature
JENNERSTOWN, PA (Sept.
3, 2005) … Mark Smith ended his dry spell at the Jennerstown Speedway
Saturday evening, and drove to his sixth victory of the season in the
75-Lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Wheeler Bros. super late model feature
event.
The ‘Meyersdale Missle’
started seventh in the 24 car starting field and passed his team mate
Dave Houpt for the front spot on Lap 24. Former NASCAR Northeast Region
Champion Richard Mitchell moved into the runner-up slot on the 31st
circuit, but was unable to cut Smith’s margin.
“We messed the car up
a little bit when we hit the wall on the back straight during our heat
race,” Smith said from victory lane. “we really seem to be at our best
during the longer races. We really live to do this; it’s our whole
life.”
A major crash on
Lap-50 involving Houpt, Paul Urso and Todd Goble brought out the red
flag. Houpt and Kyle Martel tangled on the front straight, sending Houpt
into a long slide. Urso threw his car into a spin, but made contact and
climbed over Houpts machine shearing off part of the roll cage. All the
drivers walked away unscathed.
Mitchell made a run at
Smith on the ensuing restart, but faded to third after being passed by
Barry Awtey. Tommy Beck crossed the finish line in fourth, in front of
Garry Wiltrout. Mark Poole, Todd Price, Martel, Mark Cottone and Jason
Lasky rounded out the top-10.
PJ Ehrlich won his
eighth PA legacy main of the season, and clinched the 2005 point
championship in the process. David Campbell ran a close second in the
special 30-Lap championship, followed by Martel, Dan Brink and Lauren
Butler.
Rick Boyer ran away
and hid from the field in the 25-Lap late model feature. The Blairsville
driver outdistanced Wade Champeno, Daniel Angelicchio, Todd Corson and
Mel Wilt to nail down his eighth victory.
George Nicola assumed
the lead from Greg Praysner on the ninth go round of the 20-Lap Advance
Auto Parts street stock main. Roger Onstead eventually finished second,
trailed by Joe Nicola, Praysner and Josh Dunmyer.
Eugene Zerfoss took
his first win of the year in the Pizza Hut hobby stock finale. Scott
Mcall finished second, ahead of Deidre Petrie, John Steeley and Cindy
Shaulis.
