BECK CLAIMS
JENNERSTOWN CHAMPIONSHIP
JENNERSTOWN, PA (Sept.
17, 2005) … Bobby Henry and Kyle Martel won the battles in the Wheeler
Bros. super late model division, splitting twin 30-lap features Saturday
evening at Jennerstown Speedway, but it was Tommy Beck who won the war,
as he captured his first NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series championship.
Bobby Henry was
victorious in the first feature contest, leading all 30-laps after out
jumping pole sitter Jayme Beck at the outset. Mark Smith, who has six
wins to his credit at the Somerset County oval this season, moved past
Jayme Beck for second on Lap 18, but was unable to close the gap on
Henry, who easily claimed his second victory.
“The car was pretty
good tonight,” Henry said. This is the car we normally race at
Motordrome (Speedway). It was a little loose, but it was drivable
loose.”
Clarion driver Todd
Goble recorded a career best third place finish, ahead of Kyle Martel
and Mark Cottone. Tommy Beck only finished sixth in the contest, but it
was good enough to clinch the division championship. Jayme Beck, Garry
Wiltrout, Barry Awtey and Jason Lasky rounded out the top-10.
Martel, who was a
rookie sensation last season, took command of the second feature from
Lasky on the 17th circuit, and then had to stave off a strong
challenge from Smith to preserve his first 2005 triumph.
“This would have been
my first season without a win since I started racing if I hadn’t won
tonight,” Martel said from Victory Lane. “We’ll be back next year.”
Smith hung on for
second, trailed by: Henry, Lasky, Mark Poole, Tommy Beck, Wiltrout,
Cottone and Goble.
Trevor Bayne of
Knoxville, Tenn came into Saturday night’s Allison Legacy Series
championship series race with 10 wins and left Jennerstown with number
11 under his belt, surviving six yellow flags in the 50-lap contest.
Michael Cooper was second, in front of Jennerstown season champion PJ
Ehrlich, Nicholas Pope and Casey Holt.
Rick Boyer again took
no prisoners in the 30-lap late model finale, driving past Dusty Rhoads
on Lap 6 to win his eighth feature. Rhoads finished second, which was
good enough to claim track championship honors. Snooky Williams, Mel
Wilt, and Wade Champeno were third through fifth.
The Advance Auto Parts
street stock championship point battle ended before the competitors got
a lap in the books. Only two points separated Richard Nicola and Roger
Onstead at the beginning of the feature, but the two drivers got
together, with Onstead leaving the track on the back of a wrecker. Joe
Nicola eventually passed Phil Grubbs with two laps left in the 30-lap
main to record his first ever Jennerstown victory. Richard Nicola
recovered to finish third, and claim the track championship. Scott
Bowman and Bill Aston finished fourth and fifth.
Deidre Petrie appeared
to win the Pizza Hut hobby stock feature, but was disqualified in a
post-race tech inspection. John Steeley was then awarded the win over
newly crowned champion Greg Lohr, Eugene Zerfoss, Cindy Shaulis and Jeff
Zillweger.
Super mini-cup winners
were Ron Robbins Jr. and Robbie Kendall.
