Awtey a survivor at jennerstown

JENNERSTOWN, PA (May 21, 2005) … Former track champion Barry Awtey survived a three-hour rain delay and several major crashes to pick up the 30-lap Wheeler Brothers super late model feature win Saturday evening in  NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series action at Jennerstown Speedway.

The Jenners driver started on the pole and led every lap of the contest, but had to hold off  a fast closing Tommy Beck, who finished on his bumper as he crossed the finish line.

“It was pretty good to come back from the bad crash we had on opening day to get the car this close tonight,” said Awtey from Victory Lane, “but we still have to do our home work because Tommy (Beck) was catching us there at the end. If it was a 50-lap race I don’t know if I would have been able to hold him off.”

A pair of vicious early race accidents marred the race, and eliminated several competitors. Paul Urso spun coming off turn 4 on the opening lap, collecting the cars of Mark Cottone and Todd Goble. A grinding crash on the restart sent the cars of Chris Lester, Joe Moose, Mark Poole and Branden Taylor to the pits.

Garry Wiltrout worked his way through the field to finish a distant third, ahead of Tim Bainey Jr, and Mark Smith.

The second scheduled 30-lap super late model feature was cancelled, and will be made up on June 11.

Jennerstown’s Dusty Rhoads duplicated Awtey’s feat in the 20-lap late model attraction by leading from flag to flag.  Opening night winner Todd Price was second, trailed by Dink Colarusso, Wade Champeno and rookie Andrew Wylie.

Andrew Kostelnik captured the hotly contest 20-lap Advance Auto Parts street stock main after taking over the front position  from early leader Bobby Young on the 12th circuit. Richard Nicola was a close second, in front of Roger Onstead, Josh Dunmyer and Jason Holder.

David Campbell was untouchable in the PA legacy main event, as he drove away from PJ Ehrlich, Chris Brink, Jayme Beck and Dan Brink from his pole position starting position.

Deidre Petrie outgunned pole sitter Dennis Roles going into turn 1 of the 15-lap Pizza Hut hobby stock feature and never looked back, as the Greensburg driver picked up her first feature win at the Somerset County half mile paved oval. Bill Karson was second, while Greg Lohr, Roles and Jeff Zillweger rounded out the top five.

Tom Knight Sr outlasted Fred Casagni and Ron Piovesan to win the 15-lap Pittsburgh Circle Track Club Senior Series contest.

In a special ceremony the late Mike (Little) Serokman, Jim Burns, Lou Blaney, Larry Wright, the late Piney Lasky, Steve Peles and Jack Freeman were inducted into the Jennerstown Speedway Hall of Fame.
