HEnry and smith bag jennerstown victories
JENNERSTOWN, PA (June
25,2005) … Bobby Henry reached a milestone and Mark Smith continued to
dominate the Wheelers Brothers super late model action at Jennerstown
Speedway Saturday evening, as they split the twin 30-lap NASCAR Dodge
Weekly Series feature events.
Henry started on the
pole of the 23-car field, jumped ahead of Kyle Martel at the drop of the
green flag, and never looked back as he drove his Bob Bentz Jr. owned
Monte Carlo to his first win of the season.
The victory also
marked win number 100 for the Connellsville driver over a career that
has spanned 24-years. Ironically, Henry also captured his first win at
Jennerstown on the old dirt half-mile facility.
“I forgot all about
the 100 wins, honestly… that’s pretty cool,” said Henry. “We started up
front, and had a good car. We’ve been having problems with the power
steering unit on this car, but we got that fixed. Hopefully, we’ll be
here more often.”
Defending track
champion Garry Wiltrout finished second, ahead of Smith, Martel and Mark
Cottone. Barry Awtey, Mark Poole, Tommy Beck, Snooky Williams and
Richard Mitchell rounded out the top-10.
Smith raced to his
third triumph of the year in the second 30-lap contest and in the
process moved into a tie for fourth place with Jeff Dunmyer on the all
time Jennerstown asphalt win list with 30 victories.
The ‘Meyersdale
Missile’started 11th , and charged through the pack to take over the
lead from Tommy Beck on Lap 13. After surrendering the front spot
briefly to Awtey on a 23rd lap restart, Smith reassumed
command for good one lap later.
“I don’t want to talk
about that restart with Barry (Awtey)… I’m not real sure what was going
on when he jumped me for the lead,” Smith said. “We were on the outside
on the next restart, and I ran it into Turn 1 for all it was worth. This
car works the best on the outside.”
Awtey hung on for the
runner-up spot in front of Tommy Beck, Wiltrout, Poole, Cottone, Dave
Houpt, Williams, Jayme Beck and Mitchell.
Altoona’s Mel Wilt led
wire-to-wire in the 25-lap late model main to pick up his first win in
2005. Rookie Andrew Wylie was second, trailed by Dusty Rhoads, Rick
Boyer and Dink Colarusso.
Friedens Roger Onstead
was a first time winner in the 20-lap Advance Auto Parts street stock
feature, outdistancing Josh Dunmyer, Rich Nicola, Bobby Young and Scott
Bowman.
David Campbell
returned to the winners circle in PA legacy competition over Jayme
Bolkovac, P J Ehrlich, Chris Brink and Jack Causer.
Defending track champion Patrick
Parlock finally cracked the win column this season, as he drove to
victory over Gregory Lohr, John Steely, Cindy Shaulis, and Deidre
Petrie in the 15-lap Pizza Hut hobby stock feature.
