ABOLD wins jennerstown ISMA CONTEST
JENNERSTOWN, PA (June
18, 2005) … Veteran International Super Modified Association (ISMA)
driver Pat Abold took advantage of Mark Sammut’s misfortune to pick-up
the victory in the 50-lap feature attraction for the open wheel machines
Saturday night at Jennerstown Speedway.
Sammut of London,
Ontario, Canada held the race lead for the first 36 laps before he
slammed into the front stretch wall while attempting to execute a pass
of two lapped cars racing side-by-side. Sammut was uninjured in the
crash, however ISMA officials red flagged the race to allow competitors
the opportunity to change tires after discovering that several cars were
racing on dangerously blistered rubber.
Remarkably, Abold
chose not to change tires under the red flag. “”Everybody had tire
problems tonight,” he said. “Our tire was slightly blistered when the
red flag came out, but we decided to go with the tire on the restart.”
The decision worked
for Abold, as the Pennellville, New York driver moved from the fourth
position to the front on the restart and never looked back, cruising to
the win over Mike Ordway, Chris Perely, the winner of last years
Jennerstown ISMA contest, Nokie Fonoro and Russ Wood.
“It’s always great to
win at Jennerstown,” Abold said. “This is an awesome facility. It’s one
of the fastest tracks that we run on.”
Two weeks ago Wheeler
Brothers super late model driver Mark Smith had to forfeit a win at
Jennerstown in NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series competition due to a rules
violation. This week Smith returned to Victory Lane, despite starting
last in the 18-car starting field.
Smith moved steadily
through the field, taking over the fourth spot on Lap 19, and then past
early pacesetter Tommy Beck 10-laps later to take the lead. Beck was
able to keep Smith in his sights, but was forced to settle for a distant
second in front of Dave Houpt, Mark Poole and Barry Awtey, who recovered
from an early race accident.
After nearly
destroying his car in an opening night crash, Blairsville’s Rick Boyer
made a triumphant return to win the 25 lap late model race.
Points leader Dusty
Rhoads was second, followed by Todd Corson, Wade Champeno and Dink
Colarusso.
Adam Kostelnik won the
special race for Grand American modifieds after taking the front spot
from George Nicola on the fourth circuit. Tom Knight Jr., John Pribanich
and Matt Panaia were third through fifth.
P J Ehrlich nipped
Jayme Beck and David Campbell at the line in the Pa legacy 20 lap
feature event. Chris Brink and Kyle Martel rounded out the top five.
Greg Lohr continued
his hot hand in the Pizza Hut hobby stock class, outdistancing Jeff
Zillweger, Scott Caron, Deidre Petrie and Cindy Shaulis.
Richard Nicola came
from the 11th starting position to capture the 20 lap Advance
Auto Parts street stock finale over Roger Onstead, Kostelnik, Josh
Dunmyer and Greg Praysner.
