Wiltrout outruns
rain to win jennerstown feature
JENNERSTOWN, PA (Aug.
20, 2005) … Defending Wheeler Bros. super late model champion Garry
Wiltrout captured his first NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series feature win of
the year Saturday evening at Jennerstown Speedway, fending off 21 other
challengers and a monstrous thunderstorm which struck the half-mile
paved oval two thirds of the way through the contest.
Wiltrout started in
the second starting slot and immediately jumped in front of the pack at
the drop of the green flag. The Somerset driver survived two race
stoppages, before a torrential down pour stopped the racing for good on
the 21st circuit.
The first incident
came on Lap 11 when Kyle Martel and Jayme Beck tangled on the front
straight, sending Beck into a spin. Chris Lester was unable to avoid
Beck, and plowed head on into her disabled machine to bring out the red
flag. Both drivers climbed out of their mangled cars uninjured.
The race was slowed
again four laps later when Paul Urso and Jason Lasky looped going into
Turn 3 to bring out the yellow flag.
Mark Poole ran a solid
race to finish a distant second in front of point leader Tommy Beck,
Mark Smith and Dave Houpt. Richard Mitchell, Bobby Henry, Barry Awtey,
Mark Cottone and Jeff Dunmyer rounded out the top-10.
Feature races in the
other four classes were cancelled.. Extended-lap feature races, with
increased purses, will be conducted on the Sept.17 “Night of
Champions’.
The super late model
division will participate in twin 30-lap features as part of next
Saturday’s ‘Christmas in August’ Fan Appreciation Night. All spectators
will be admitted for a $3.00 general admission price.
Wiltrout and Tommy
Beck took the super late model heat races, while Wade Champeno was
victorious in the late model preliminary. Advance Auto Parts heat races
were won by Joe Nicola and Roger Onstead. PJ Ehrlich and Chris Brink
took the honors in the PA legacy qualifiers, with Gregory Lohr and Cindy
Shaulis taking the checkered flags in the Pizza Hut hobby stocks.
