LEicht and Lay winners in jennerstown asa –
hoss action
JENNERSTOWN, PA (Aug.
13, 2005) … Stephen Leicht and Brian Lay were the big winners in
Saturday evenings Tribune-Democrat ‘Doubleheader’ at Jennerstown
Speedway, as the two drivers drove to victory in the inaugural
appearance of the ASA Late Model Series 100 and the Hoosier Outlaw
Sprint Series (HOSS) 30 lap feature contests respectively.
Leicht, the current
ASA point leader, passed Scott Baker with 33 laps left in the century
grind and pulled away for his fourth win of the season after a spirited
battle with the Akron, Ohio veteran.
“The outside line
really works good here,” said the 18-year-old Leicht, who hails from
Ashville N.C. “We talked about this all day long; where you could pass
and where you couldn’t, and how the track would act. We hit it right on
the head.”
Brian Campbell and
Chad Wood, who trail Leicht in the points race, finished second and
third, while Baker faded to fourth in front of Travis Dassow, Kris
Stump, Bobby Stremme, Ryan Carson, Keeton Hanks and Brent Downey.
Wood was the fastest
qualifier with a time of 18.872 over the half mile paved oval. Baker led
the most laps in the race, which was slowed by only three cautions.
Lay led the way in the
blistering fast HOSS sprint event which was completed in just under
eight minutes. The Millbury, Ohio pilot jumped into command at the drop
of the green and never looked back, outdistancing Sondi Eden, Tim Cox,
Jeff Bloom and Jimmy McCune in the process. Hank Lower, Greg Wheeler,
Jerry Caryer, Ron Koehler, and Michael Tarlton rounded out the top-10.
“This is one of the
nicest race tracks I’ve ever been to,” Lay said. “This was my first time
here, and I really liked the place. I hit all my marks and stayed
consistent.”
In NASCAR Dodge Weekly
Series competition Tommy Beck edged out Garry Wiltrout to nail down his
third win in Wheeler Bros. super late model action. Beck passed the
defending track champion on a restart following a caution with just
seven laps remaining in the 50 lapper.
“I’ve become a little
more patient as a driver,” Beck said, “we were a tad bit quicker, but
the track was slick tonight, so I wasn’t going to make a mistake running
second. We got lucky on the restart and got by Gary going into Turn 1.”
Mark Smith recovered
from a first lap incident to finish third in front of Barry Awtey, Mark
Poole, Dave Houpt, Kyle Martel, Mark Cottone, Paul Urso and Todd Price.
Rick Boyer survived
the caution-plagued 20 lap late model feature to pick up his sixth
feature win of the year. Mel Wilt, Wade Champeno, Snooky Williams and
Andrew Wylie finished second through fifth.
George Nicola defeated
Richard Nicola to win the 20 lap Advance Auto Parts street stock main
event. Josh Dunmyer finished third in front of Joe Nicola and Steve
Singo. Roger Onstead’s bid for a third straight victory ended on the
first lap when he was eliminated in a multi-car pile-up on the front
straight.
Patrick Parlock
cruised to victory in the 15 lap Pizza Hut hobby stock feature,
outdistancing point leader Gregory Lohr, John Steeley, Deidre Petrie and
Cindy Shaulis.
PJ Ehrlich returned to
Victory Lane in the PA legacy series, finishing ahead of Martel, David
Campbell, Dan Brink and Lauren Butler. Chris Brink walked away from a
violent first lap crash that virtually destroyed his car after he hit
the third turn wall and flipped end-over-end.
