JENNERSTOWN FIRST STOP for Hooters procup championship
JENNERSTOWN, PA (Sept. 15, 2005) … Jennerstown Speedway
will host the first leg of the five-race United Speed
Alliance Racing (USAR) Hooters ProCup Championship
Series Saturday, Sept. 24, with the running of the
Charlie Campbell BF Goodrich Tires ‘250’.
The
unique USAR championship series will pit the top drivers
from its Northern and Southern divisions against each
other in five season-ending races to determine a
national champion.
The
Hooters ProCup championship format is very similar to
NASCAR’s ‘Chase for the Cup’, said Jennerstown general
manager Larry Mattingly. “USAR actually developed it
first back in 2001. It really ads a great deal of
excitement to the post season, and putting the Northern
drivers against the Southern drivers makes it a natural
rivalry.”
|
There will be 58 drivers eligible to participate
in the championship events. Leading the parade
will be Northern and Southern division
champion’s Benny Gordon and Shane Huffman, who
enter the fray with 190 starting points. Next in
line with 150 points are Mark McFarland, who
will drive a U.S. Navy-sponsored NASCAR BUSCH
Series car in 2006 for a team owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr, and Mardy Lindley, who has won
twice at Jennerstown in the past.
Thus far a driver
from the Northern series has never captured the
national championship, but Gordon, a two-time,
defending North titlist, will be going all out
to change that fact.. |

“We
have come close the past two seasons,” said the DuBois
driver. “We had a 38-point lead going into the last race
at USA Speedway, and then we broke a flywheel, which
destroyed our championship hopes. Our team is determined
to win it all this year.”
Clay
Rogers, who was the USAR national champion in 2004, is
currently ranked fifth in the title chase with 145
points, along with outstanding rookie competitor Woody
Howard. Former champion Bobby Gill, Gary St. Amant , a
multi-time American Speed Association kingpin, Jody
Lavender, and Jeff Agnew round out the top-10.
Huffman, who captured the title in 2003, is the
defending Charlie Campbell Memorial race winner at
Jennerstown.
