Tim Bainey Jr. returned
to the Jennerstown Speedway behind the wheel of the
DelGrosso Foods #15 for a set of NASCAR Super Late
Model Twin 30’s over the weekend.
The team decided to try
a different suspension package for the weekend’s
event, the results – although not that bad – were
not exactly what the team was looking for.
“We wanted to try
something,” said Tim Jr. “My brother and I had
talked about it for a while. You know things are
really coming together for us – we have made a lot
of changes to just about everything this year. The
setups on our cars have really changed, we have them
so dialed in that getting just another tenth of a
second is really tough. But hey we are coming here
with this DelGrosso Car to try and win – so we did
something a little different – we definitely learned
something tonight. We didn’t get the exact results
we wanted, but I think next time we are back - it
going to show.”
In the first NASCAR
Super Late Model Event of the night Tim Jr. would
work his way up through the pack quickly, he settled
into the 2nd position early in the race
and ran there throughout most of the event. A late
race caution with less than 10 laps to go would see
the field brought together for a “double wide”
restart, placing Tim Jr. on the outside of the front
row as they went green.
The restart proved to
be tough for the #15 DelGrosso Monte Carlo, as Tim
Jr. could not get the car settled into the highline
and fell from the 2nd position all the
way to 8th before finally getting to the
bottom groove with just 2 laps to go. He would
finish 8th.
“We didn’t need that
restart,” said Tim Jr. “The car was a handful – I
was doing everything I could to hang onto it while
we were out front by ourself. Once we got lined up
for that ‘double wide’ start – I knew it was going
to be interesting.”
“Timmy really had to
work the wheel in that first race,” said his brother
and Crew Chief Dan Bainey. “We tried something
different, it worked great for the 10 lap heat race,
and it worked great for 10 laps into the feature –
but after those 10 laps it went the other way on
us.”
The team got together
and made some changes for the night’s second NASCAR
Super Late Model Event. However the changes made to
the car were not completely reversible at the track.
“Some changes you just
can’t fix in an hour,” Dan smile as he started to
say. “We threw some major adjustments to the car
after that first race to try and balance out the
problem we had with our original package we brought
to the track. It was a pretty good guessing game,
but I’ll tell you what – the more we do this – the
better our guesses seem to get,” he finished with
another smile.
Tim Jr. would start the
#15 DelGrosso Car from the 5th position
for the second NASCAR Super Late Model Event. He
moved into 4th just a few laps into the
event, and then settled in line with the leaders. It
appeared the adjustments were just what the
DelGrosso Car needed as he held his own with the
100+ mile per hour freight train of cars.
The top 10 cars would
run nearly bumper to bumper for the entire event.
With just a few laps to go Tim Jr. would make a run
at the 3rd place car, he got underneath
the #92 of Jayme Beck and the two brought the crowd
to their feet as they ran door to door for the
remainder of the event – taking turns at swapping
the position by just a nose – back and forth in an
exciting duel. Tim Jr. had an advantage coming off
of turn 4 on the final lap, but the momentum of the
outside lane proved to give Beck the run needed to
beat Tim Jr. to the line. He would finish 4th.
“That was a blast,”
said a visibly excited Tim Jr. after climbing from
the #15 DelGrosso Monte Carlo. “We didn’t have the
best car, but I got everything I could out of it.
Those changes we made got us back to where we could
at least race, and man – you couldn’t ask for a
better way to finish a race.”
The DelGrosso
Racing Team will return to action Friday Night June
24th at Motordrome Speedway in Smithton,
PA for 1 of 2 stops at the speedway this season. Tim
Jr. currently sits 5th in the Jennerstown
Speedway NASCAR Super Late Model Point Standings but
will have to sit out a few events as he will spend
the next 2 weeks on the USAR Hooter’s ProCup Series
Tour where he currently sits 10 in the Championship
Point Standings. The DelGrosso Team will return to
Jennerstown July 2nd.
