Jennerstown Speed Notes …..
…Jennerstown’s ‘crate’ late
model class should be seeing an increase in numbers over
the next several weeks. Former Motordrome Speedway pro
truck competitor Steve Black has switched over to the
late model class. Several other Motordrome drivers are
also talking about converting their trucks into cars.
… In other late model news:
Todd Goble has decided to move from the super late model
class to the late model division. The Clarion teenager
hopes to gain more experience and seat time before
moving back to the supers. Alkie Cunningham II returned
to action this past Saturday… almost. After virtually
being forced to rebuild his car following an opening
night crash, the young Hancock, MD driver discovered he
had a cracked engine block when he pulled on the
speedway to practice. Greensburg’s Danny Angelicchio had
a similar fate, as his team experienced over heating
problems due to a blown head gasket.
… Former track champion and
two-time NASCAR Northeast region champion Richard
Mitchell made his 2005 debut with own team this past
week. The Bruceton Mills, West Virginia driver recorded
a pair of tenth place finishes. Mitchell will be a
semi-regular at Jennerstown this year, with his next
scheduled appearance coming on July 23.
... Word has it that
2003-04 Motordrome late model kingpin Rick Miller will
be competing at Jennerstown “very soon”. Miller should
be in action within the next several weeks, as he is
awaiting the arrival of a new ‘open’ motor. Miller’s
Motordrome success has come behind the wheel of a fuel
injected powered crate engine car, which is not legal at
Jennerstown.
… Defending PA legacy
champion Kyle Martel has recently returned to the class,
splitting the driving chores with Dave Holder in the
number 17 entry. Martel is still struggling in the super
late model ranks, but was able to record a top-five
finish last Saturday.
… Somerset’s Cindy Shaulis
has made the successful transition from dirt to asphalt
in the Pizza Hut four-cylinder hobby stock class.
Currently holding down fourth in the points race,
Shaulis has to vie for bragging rights every week, as
boyfriend Scott Rhodes is a multi-time dirt track late
model champion at district ovals. “The switch from dirt
to asphalt was a great deal easier than I anticipated,”
said Shaulis. “I’m really having a lot of fun doing
this, and it has been great for my business!” Shaulis is
a successful realtor, and was the recent subject of a
feature sports page article in the Tribune-Democrat
authored by Cory Isenberg.
…Donny Lia of Jericho, NY
dominated the recent NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event
at the Waterford Speedbowl in Conn. Former NASCAR Dodge
Weekly Series National Champion Ted Christopher is the
points leader over Chuck Hossfeld, Lia, defending
champion Tony Hirschman Jr. and Zach Sylvester. The
NASCAR ‘mod squad’ will invade Jennerstown on Sat., July
9 for the first time in six-seasons for the running of
the Wheeler Bros.150. Advance adult tickets are now on
sale for $15.00, with special pricing for seniors,
students and children.
… Tim Bainey Jr. continues
to impress the rail birds on the national racing scene.
Bainey is currently ranked ninth in the Hooters ProCup
North point race after recording an 11th
place finish two weeks ago at the Lake Erie (PA)
Speedway. That run marked the sixth-straight top-15
Hooters finish for the Osceola Mills pilot. Bainey also
finished 17th in his NASCAR Busch North
Series debut last week at the Holland (NY) Speedway
driving the Frank Fleming-owned Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Bainey is scheduled to compete in the Hooters ProCup
event at the Kil-Kare (OH) Speedway this Friday (July
1), and then return to Jennerstown on Saturday with his
DelGrosso Foods sponsored entry for Star and Stripes Fan
Appreciation night.
… Long-time Jennerstown
Speedway chief pit steward Warren Penrod has retired.
Warren has been fighting some lingering health problems
over the past several season, and has decided to step
back from the weekly grind of being a track official.
