ASA – HOSS series’ headline jennerstown event
JENNERSTOWN, PA
(Aug. 9, 2005) … Saturday evenings
Tribune-Democrat ‘Doubleheader’ at Jennerstown
Speedway, featuring the ASA Late Model Series
‘100’ and the open-wheel Hoosier Outlaw Sprint
Series (HOSS) is shaping up to be one of the
‘biggest’ events in the history of the Somerset
County half-mile paved oval.
“It will certainly
be the biggest race in terms of the number of
cars competing,” said speedway general manager
Larry Mattingly. “With the ASA and HOSS touring
series’ joining our five-division NASCAR Dodge
Weekly Series line-up we are expecting in the
neighborhood of 130 cars in the pit area. Former
promoter Stan Lasky remembers having 113 cars in
the pits once, but that is the biggest turn out
we can document.”

The ASA
Late Model Series has taken the asphalt
racing world by storm over the past two
years. Using cars identical to those
raced at weekly tracks across the
nation, and powering them with
inexpensive ‘crate’ engines costing
between $5,000 -$6,500; ASA is
revolutionizing short-track racing.
“We have
created a cost effective series that
permits racers the opportunity to
compete at the national level for a
fraction of the cost of other touring
groups,” said Ron Varney Jr., ASA
President. “Our goal was to create a
national series that showcases a
driver’s ability, not the size of his
wallet or sponsorship package. Everyone
competing in ASA has access to the same
engines. You buy them at car
dealerships, not custom race engine
shops.” |

The other side of
the doubleheader classic will feature the wild
and wooly HOSS sprint cars, who will be
attempting to shatter the all-time Jennerstown
one-lap track record of 15.239 seconds (123.320
mph).
|
Powered by
410 cubic inch fuel injected engines,
the HOSS machines feature stationary air
foils mounted over their nose and
cockpit areas, which give them added
stability in the turns. Simply put, a
sprint car is built for one purpose …
speed.
“I guess
our cars aren’t very cost effective,”
laughed HOSS President Tony Swanson.
“The engines alone probably cost more
than an entire ASA Late Model. But our
series is a different animal. There is
just something about watching unlimited
horsepower open cockpit cars racing
wheel to wheel that I can’t put into
words.” |

the race card is Jennerstown’s NASCAR Dodge
Weekly Series five-division program, competing
in a feature event only format. Headlining the
weekly attraction is a 50-lap contest for the
Wheeler Bros. super late models.
Spectator gates
will open at 2:00 PM, with ASA-HOSS time trials
slated for 3:30. Racing action will begin at
5:00. A special on-track autograph session will
precede the ASA Tribune-Democrat ‘100’.
Adult advance
tickets are on sale for $15.00 if purchased
before Aug. 12. There is also special pricing
for seniors, students and children.
In the event of
rain the program will be rescheduled for Sunday,
Aug. 14 at 2:00 PM.
