On a beautiful night for racing,
Jennerstown Speedway would first pay tribute to the victims on
the anniversary of the September 11 tragedy. Following the
driver autograph session, a moment of silence was held for all
the victims which concluded with a parade lap by some of the
competitors carrying the American Flag around the track and a
musical tribute to those who died on Flight 93, which crashed
just miles from the speedway. Super Minicup driver Kevin Moore
had all of the names of the passengers of Flight 93 on his car
and led the field around during the parade laps. When the track
got to racing, none of the point leaders were able to clinch
their respective division titles, let alone visit victory lane.
Picking up wins on this night were Mark Smith (Wheeler Brothers
Super Late Models), Todd Price (New Enterprise Stone and Lime
Late Models), Rich Nicola (Day Ford Street Stocks), Mike Stevens
(Somerset Furniture Sales Chargers), Greg Lohr (Advance Auto
Parts Hobby Stocks), Jayme Bolkovac (PA Legacy Series), and
MikeWalker (Super Minicups).
Barry Awtey jumped out to the lead
at the start of the 50-lap super late model feature and checked
out on the field as Mark Smith settled into the second spot.
Tim Bainey, Jr. was charging hard through the field and was up
to the fifth spot when disaster struck on lap 12. Bainey's
engine exploded going into turn 1, dropping oil all over the
track, with in all six cars collected in the crash. The red
flag was thrown for what would be an extensive cleanup period.
Eliminated in the crash were Bainey, Jr, Jayme Bolkovac, Snooky
Williams, Todd Goble, and Kyle Martel. Tommy Beck was able to
make repairs and continue. None of the drivers were injured.
Awtey would once again jump to the lead on the restart and put
some distance on Smith. By lap 32, Smith had run down Awtey and
spent the next several laps trying anything and everything to
take the top spot. On lap 46, Smith got a run on the outside
and went past Awtey into the lead. Smith went onto take his
third win of the season. Awtey held on for second with Richard
Mitchell, Mark Cottone and point leader Garry Wiltrout in the
top five. Wiltrout holds a 44-point lead over Awtey going into
the final week. Mitchell and Smith took heat race wins.
The 25-lap late model
feature saw Wade Champeno take the early lead. Soon he would
have to fend off the challenges of Todd Price and Rick Boyer.
Price went to the lead on lap 9 and two laps later, Boyer
overtook Champeno for second. Price looked like the man to beat
and Boyer was unable to make a challenge, but a lap 16 caution
for a spinning Todd Corson gave Boyer one last chance on the
restart. Price beat Boyer to turn 1 when the field went back to
green and went on for his sixth win of the season. Boyer, Dusty
Rhoads, Mel Wilt, and Champeno rounded out the top five.
Despite finishing ahead of Boyer, Boyer still holds a 16-point
lead over Price. Rhoads won the heat.
Dave Tavormina took the
lead at the start of the 20-lap street stock feature, holding
off a pack of strong contenders battling hard behind. Disaster
struck Tavormina while leading on lap 8 as he slammed the turn 4
wall right in front of the field after an apparent mechanical
failure ending his night. Rich Nicola inherited the lead for
the restart. Nicola would have Adam Kostelnik right behind him
the remainder of the race but was unable to make a move to the
front. Nicola took home his first win of the season ahead of
Kostelnik, point leader Dink Colarusso, George Nicola and Roger
Onstead. Colarusso holds a comfortable 20-point lead over
Kostelnik. Kostelnik and George Nicola won the heats.
Jayme Bolkovac took the
lead at the drop of the green flag in the 25-lap PA Legacy
Series feature event and never looked back. Dave Campbell and
Kyle Martel both passed second place Chris Brink near the
halfway point of the race but Bolkovac was out to a commanding
lead. On lap 18, Martel made the pass on Campbell for second
and set his sights on reeling in Bolkovac. But on this night
Martel would have to settle for the runner-up spot as Bolkovac
had the field covered, taking her second win of the season in
the caution free event. Campbell, PJ Ehrlich and Brink rounded
out the top five. Martel extended his point lead on Campbell
and now leads by 36 points. Martel and Bolkovac won the heats.
Scott Bowman and Mike
Stevens battled hard for the lead during the early laps of the
charger feature. Stevens finally took control of the top spot
on lap 6 of the 15-lap event. However the coast would not be
clear for Stevens, as Duane Noel would move into the runner-up
spot and put the pressure on Stevens. Noel went to the inside
of Stevens coming to the white flag, but Stevens slammed the
door going into turn 1. The race would go caution free as
Stevens would earn his career first win. Behind Noel were
Stephen Mock, Bowman and Phil Grubbs. Noel, who won the heat
race, leads Stevens by just 14 points.
Greg Lohr took off with
the lead at the start of the hobby stock feature. After a
caution for Eugene Zerfoss, whose car made hard contact with the
outside wall, Lohr and Patrick Parlock would pull away from the
field in their battle for the lead. Parlock, who jumped into
Bill Karson's car for the feature
after suffering mechanical problems in his own ride, was unable
to make a challenge on Lohr for the lead. Lohr took home win
number four with Parlock, Deidre Petrie, John Steeley and Jeff
Zillweger in the top five. Parlock holds a slim six-point lead
over Lohr, who also won the heat race.
Mike Walker used lap
traffic to his advantage going down the backstretch to pass
leader Mark Fell as he went onto win the 20-lap minicup
feature. Fell led the first ten laps before yielding the top
spot to Walker. Matt Wallace beat Fell to the stripe for second
in the caution free event with Frankie White and Kevin Moore in
the top five.
Next week the champions
will be crowned in all divisions during the final points night
in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Jennerstown Speedway. A
regular show of Wheeler Brothers Super Late Models, New
Enterprise Stone and Lime Late Models, Day Ford Street Stocks,
Somerset Furniture Sales Chargers, Advance Auto Parts Hobby
Stocks, and the PA Legacy Series is on the card. Grandstand
admission will be $5 and an autograph session will be held once
again on the front stretch from 6:00-7:00 giving fans one last
chance to meet and greet their favorite drivers at the Laurel
Highlands Oval. On September 25, Jennerstown Speedway will pull
the curtains on the 2004 season with the running of the USAR
Hooters Procup Series 'BF Goodrich 250'
