A persistent light rain forced
the cancellation of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at
Jennerstown Speedway. Showers moved in just before practice
laps were set to begin, but track officials along with many
of the drivers on hand were able to dry the track on a
couple instances only to have their efforts erased by the
rain. Western PA GM Service Club, Seven Springs Mountain
Resort and Craftsman Tools were on hand to present the night's
racing which included the Super Minicup Cars, which had a
strong field on hand. The third rainout of the season also
delayed the return of former track and NASCAR Northeast
Region champion Richard Mitchell to full-time competition in
the Wheeler Brothers Super Late Models.
This year, the battle for the
championship just may be the best ever at the Laurel
Highlands Oval in all divisions. There is a deadlock at the
top spot in three classes with one seeing only a two-point
difference. With a lot of racing yet to go, determining the
track champions is certainly far from over.
The Wheeler Brothers Super Late
Models have always been a very competitive division but
seeing six different drivers take home wins out of seven
events this year is something that has not been done in
recent memory. Bobby Henry and Garry Wiltrout are tied with
314 points each with Neil Brown third with 296 and defending
track champion Barry Awtey two points behind Brown. Henry
is the lone repeat winner thus far with two victories with
Wiltrout, Brown, Awtey, Mark Poole, and rookie Kyle Martel
all with one win each.
Todd Price leads the New
Enterprise Stone and Lime Late Models in points and wins
with 290 points and three wins. Rick Boyer is second in the
standings with 280 and yet to win this season. Dusty
Rhoads, Mel Wilt and Wade Champeno have one win each in this
highly competitive division in its inaugural season.
Brett Boyer and Kyle Martel are
tied atop the PA Legacy Series points with 276. Martel has
been on a roll lately winning the last three feature events
while Boyer is still winless but consistent top five
finishes have kept him up in the standings. Dave Campbell
has two wins on the year and sits third in points with 270.
P.J. Ehrlich has the other feature win this season.
Dink Colarusso dominated the
Day Ford Street Stocks in 2003 and seems to be picking up
where he left off this year. With four wins out of six
races this season, he has a strong hold on the top spot with
294 points, 38 more than Adam Kostelnik's 256. Kostelnik
and Roger Onstead have the other feature wins thus far.
Scott Bowman holds a two-point
lead (280-278) over Duane Noel in the Somerset Furniture
Sales Chargers. Mike Stevens sits third with 270 points.
Bowman and Noel are the only two drivers to pick up wins
with three each.
Patrick Parlock and Greg Lohr
sit tied atop the Advance Auto Parts Hobby Stocks with 278
points each. Parlock has three wins with Lohr reaching
victory lane twice. Jeff Zillweger also has one win and
sits third in points with 262.
Jennerstown Speedway returns to
action next Saturday as Dodge presents a regular
five-division program of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series
along with the PA Legacy Series. Also of note, coming up in
two weeks the Winged Sprints on Asphalt return for their
second appearance of the season. The Wheeler Brothers Super
Late Models will also be running twin 50-lap features with
regular racing in all other divisions. And on August 14,
the American Speed Association will make its annual trip to
Jennerstown for the running of the Pennsylvania 300. The
super late models and late models will also be in action
along with the ASA Series. For more information on these or
other upcoming events contact the track office at
