MARTEL SWEEPS SUPER LATE MODEL; BOYER, BOLKOVAC EARN FIRST WINS AT JENNERSTOWN

by Mike Rininger

Kyle Martel may only be a rookie in the Wheeler Brothers Super Late Models, but has certainly raised some eyebrows and become a force to be reckoned with.  The 17-year old pilot won both 35-lap features on a caution plagued USG Night at Jennerstown Speedway.  Rick Boyer (New Enterprise Stone and Lime Late Models) and Jayme Bolkovac (PA Legacy Series) both picked up their first wins of the season joining repeat winners Roger Onstead (Day Ford Street Stocks), Duane Noel (Somerset Furniture Sales Chargers) and Patrick Parlock (Advance Auto Parts Hobby Stocks) in victory lane.  The Pittsburgh Circle Track Club Senior Series drivers and cars were also on hand with George Nicola picking up the win.

A crash during super late model practice unfortunately eliminated three of the twenty-one cars signed in.  Derek Wink spun in oil put down by Mark Poole, making his return to Jennerstown after being sidelined by injuries suffered in a serious crash earlier in the season, who had an oil line come loose.  Neil Brown and Jeff Dunmyer both slid through the oil and slammed into Wink coming out of turn 2.  All three cars were severely damaged.  Brown was forced to jump into his backup car for the remainder of the night, which was originally scheduled to be driven by Doug Bacchiochi.  Wink was taken to a local hospital with possible rib injuries.

Snooky Williams jumped out to the early lead in the first super late model feature with Jayme Bolkovac trailing close behind.  After a lap 3 yellow for Mark Smith, who stopped on the track, Kyle Martel got the edge on the restart and went into the lead as Tommy Beck moved into the second spot and set his sights on the leader.  A scary crash on lap 14 took place on the backstretch as Williams spun collecting Brown and Poole.  Brown climbed and rode the inside wall before coming to a stop.  Fortunately all drivers were ok.  Beck, who seemed to have the fastest car on the track, was relegated to the rear of the field after jumping the ensuing restart.  When they did go back to green, Martel checked out and cruised to the win.  Barry Awtey and Bobby Henry finished a distant second and third.  Beck came from the back to finish fourth with Jason Lasky, back after a crash had him sidelined for over a month, rounded out the top five.

Bolkovac set the early pace in the second feature, but once again an early caution would slow the field as Mark Cottone came to a stop on lap 4.  Beck passed Bolkovac for the lead on lap 7 and started to put some distance between Bolkovac and third place Henry.  Henry moved into second and was gaining ground on Beck when Smith came to a stop on lap 19 bringing out the yellow.  Beck continued to lead after the restart over Henry and now Martel, who passed Bolkovac for third.  Henry took the lead with an inside move on lap 27 with Martel following right behind pushing Beck back to third.  After a Chris Lester spin brought out the races final caution, Martel moved to the outside of Henry on the restart and made the pass for the lead.  From there Martel went on unchallenged for the second win of the night, and third win of the season.  Henry, Beck, Garry Wiltrout, and Awtey completed the top five.  Heat races were won by Wiltrout and Smith.

Todd Corson took command of the late model feature pulling away from the rest of the field.  A three-car crash on lap 6 for Mel Wilt, Todd Price and Dusty Rhoads brought out the first of four yellow flags.  All three cars suffered considerable damage but after spending time in the pits and hard work by crewmembers, all would make it back out and finish the race.  Wade Champeno took the lead on the restart bringing Rick Boyer with him.  Contact between both drivers sent them spinning in turn 1, handing the lead back to Corson.  But that lead was short lived, as Corson would spin in front of the field on lap 15, handing the lead to Jacob Coffin.  Coffin led after the restart but could not hold off the challenge by Boyer, who went to the lead on lap 18 and never looked back winning his first feature of the season.  Champeno came back to finish second followed by Coffin, Corson and Wilt in the top five.  Price won the heat race.

Brett Boyer led the first two laps of the PA Legacy Series feature event before giving way to Kyle Martel.  The battle for the lead was tight early on with as many as six drivers all in the lead pack.  After a lengthy delay for oil around the speedway, the lap 11 restart saw Jayme Bolkovac jump into the lead only to give it up a lap later to P.J. Ehrlich.  Ehrlich would be sent to the rear of the field after jumping a late race restart, handing the lead back to Bolkovac.  From there Bolkovac would hold off the challenges of Martel and go onto take her first win of the year at Jennerstown.  Rounding out the top five were Ehrlich, who made a hard charge back to finish third, Dave Campbell and Boyer.

George Nicola led Rich Nicola to the drop of the green in the 18-car street stock feature, leading the first four laps before Rich made his way past and started to pull away.  The yellow flew on lap 9 when Todd Knight bounced off the backstretch wall ending his night, closing the gap between Nicola and now second place Roger Onstead.  On the restart Greg Kent lost the motor quickly bringing the yellow back out.  Onstead got the jump on the restart and took off with the lead, but a lap later a crash involving Josh Dunmyer, Joe Nicola and Mike Davis slowed the field once again.  Once back to green, Onstead took a commanding lead never to be challenged on his way to win number two this year.  Rich Nicola, Bobby Young, Dink Colarusso, and Adam Kostelnik completed the top five.  Onstead and Young won the heat races.

At the start of the special 'Hoss's Steak and Seafood 15 for the chargers, Andrew Kostelnik took off with the lead.  Trouble struck point leader Scott Bowman on lap 5 as he drifted high coming out of turn 4 slamming the wall hard, ending his night.  Kostelnik kept the lead on the restart, withstanding the pressure put on by Mike Stevens and Duane Noel.  The three cars put on a fierce fight for the lead with Stevens pulling ahead on lap 10. But on the white flag lap, contact between Noel and Stevens saw Stevens collect Kostelnik in turn 1 with Kostelnik bouncing off the outside wall.  On the restart, Noel grabbed the lead and held off Stephen Mock by mere inches at the stripe after the two lap dash to the finish, taking home his fourth win of the season.  Rick Phillips finished third and was the only other car running at the end.  Stevens and Kostelnik were credited with fourth and fifth.  Noel also won the heat race.

Bill Karson led the first two laps of the hobby stock feature before giving way to Bob Enos.  Enos was strong early in the race and looked to be in great shape to take home his first ever win, but would soon have to face the challenges of top runners Patrick Parlock and Greg Lohr.  Parlock passed Enos on lap 8 bringing Lohr with him and Enos began to fade.  Lohr could never mount a serious challenge on Parlock, who went onto take his fifth win of the year in the only caution free feature of the night.  Eugene Zerfoss came home a solid third, while a three wide battle on the final lap saw John Steeley come home fourth and Deidre Petrie in fifth.  Lohr won the heat.

George Nicola led lap 1 of the 15-lap Pittsburgh Circle Track Club Senior Series feature event with Tom Knight, Sr. right behind in second.  Knight, Sr. grabbed the lead on the restart after an early caution for Bob Bentz, Jr. and Fred Cassagina.  Nicola regrouped and took back the lead on lap 5 and who go the remainder of the race unchallenged for the win.  Knight, Sr. held onto second followed by Ed Basshear, Bentz, Jr. and Joe Yakich in the top five.  Cassagina won the heat race.
