Local emergency service personnel
were recognized Saturday night as Whelen presented Fireman/EMS
Night at Jennerstown Speedway. Heavy storms just off to the
east of the speedway looked as though they were going to put a
damper on the night's action, which
included twin feature events for the Wheeler Brothers Super
Late Models and New Enterprise Stone and Lime Late Models.
But fortunately they stayed away and all feature events would
be completed. Taking home victories on this night were Barry
Awtey and Mark Smith in the super late models with Rick Boyer
winning both late model features. Adam Kostelnik was
victorious in the Day Ford Street Stocks, Stephen Mock picked
up a career first in the Somerset Furniture Sales Chargers,
Greg Lohr won the Advance Auto Parts Hobby Stock main and P.J.
Ehrlich was victorious in the PA Legacy Series feature. The
Super Minicups were also on hand for two feature events with
Mike Walker and Michael Boer taking home wins.
Bobby Henry jumped out to the
early lead in the first of two 35-lap super late model
features. Trailing close behind would be Barry Awtey and Mark
Smith. Smith would soon pass Awtey and on lap 10 make the
move by Henry for the race lead. While Smith and Awtey
started to put some distance between themselves and the rest
of the field, Kyle Martel made his way into the third spot
only to have nearly a straightaway distance between him and
the leaders. With five laps to go, Martel caught the top two
and with only two laps remaining, passed Awtey for second.
Coming to the white flag, Martel made the pass on Smith and
went on to take the checkered flag. Awtey came home second
with Smith falling to third. Henry and Tommy Beck completed
the top five. However, Martel's car
would fail post race inspection giving the win to Awtey. The
top five would then consist of Awtey, Smith, Henry, Beck, and
Snooky Williams.
The second feature
saw Henry once again jump out to the lead with Smith trailing
behind in second. Smith passed Henry for the lead on lap 11
and started to check out from the field. The caution flew on
lap 24 as Wiltrout and Martel both went spinning in turn 1.
Wiltrout would be able to continue. On the restart Smith got
the edge over now second place Awtey, as Henry would suffer
mechanical woes and limp to the finish. Awtey stayed right
with Smith but could never make the move. Smith went onto
take his second win of the season with Awtey, Beck, Williams
and Wiltrout in the top five. Smith and Martel won the heat
races.
Todd Price jumped out
to the lead in the first of two 25-lap late model features but
a yellow for a spinning Josh Butler would close in the field.
On the restart Price and Dusty Rhoads put on a great
side-by-side battle for the lead, but contact on lap 10 going
into turn one unfortunately saw Rhoads'
car sent spinning bringing out another yellow. The race's
final caution flew a couple laps later as contact between Erik
Skomo and Wade Champeno saw both cars slide into the outside
wall, eliminating them from the event. Rick Boyer took
command of the lead after the restart, which saw Price slow
dramatically and head into the pits with transmission
trouble. Boyer picked up his third win of the season. Rhoads
came back to finish second ahead of Todd Corson, Mel Wilt and
Butler in the top five.
Corson grabbed the
lead at the start of the second feature, but Rhoads stayed
right on his rear bumper throughout the early stages of the
race. Near disaster struck on lap 11 as the leader Corson
spun while leading bringing out the yellow. Fortunately the
rest of the field made it safely by. Rhoads'
stay at the top spot was short lived as Boyer took the lead on
the restart and pulled away from the field making it a clean
sweep on the night. Rhoads, Price, Corson and Wilt rounded
out the top five. Boyer also won the heat race.
P.J. Ehrlich took
full advantage of his starting spot in the pole position,
jumping out to the lead at the drop of the green flag over
Kyle Martel in the 25-lap PA Legacy Series feature event.
Ehrlich and Martel were clearly the class of the field as the
two pulled away from the rest of the field. Ehrlich would
however maintain a near straightaway lead over Martel
throughout the race. As the laps winded down in the caution
free event, the best battle on the track took place for the
third spot between Dave Campbell and Chris Brink. As the
checkered flag fell, it would be Ehrlich picking up his fourth
win of the season with Martel coming home a distant second.
Campbell edged out Brink for third with Brett Boyer completing
the top five. Martel won the lone heat race.
Adam Kostelnik took
the lead on lap 4 of the 20-lap street stock main with Dink
Colarusso following a short distance behind, but unable to
mount any pressure. The yellow flew on lap 13 as Joe Nicola
and June Weyant both went spinning in turn 3. Both drivers
would make quick repairs and rejoined the field. Colarusso
tried to make the move past Kostelnik on the restart but to no
avail and settled back into the second spot. Kostelnik
survived a late race restart and went onto take home his
second win of the season ahead of Colarusso, George Nicola,
Bobby Young, and Roger Onstead. Kostelnik and Colarusso won
the two heat races.
With only four
chargers in the pits for competition, the decision was made to
run the field with the street stocks for the evening but still
determining a winner in the division. On this night it would
be rookie driver Stephen Mock getting his career first
victory. Duane Noel passed Mock midway through the feature
but would suffer a flat tire and head to the pits during a
yellow flag. Mock held off Mike Stevens for the win. Noel
came back to finish third ahead of Scott Bowman.
Bob Enos took the
early race lead in the 15-lap hobby stock main but give up the
lead to Eugene Zerfoss on lap 2. Greg Lohr got passed Zerfoss
on lap 4 but would have to contend with Patrick Parlock the
remainder of the race. Parlock, who has won six features this
season, moved into second at the halfway point and put the
pressure on Lohr but was unable to make the move past. Lohr
ran a smooth race and picked up win number three this season.
Parlock, Zerfoss, Deidre Petrie, and Enos rounded out the top
five. Lohr also won the heat race.
The Super Minicup
cars were on hand for a national points event in the Scale
Racing League and ran two 20-lap features, with the first
being a make-up for an event rained out at the Laurel
Highlands Oval earlier in the season. Sixteen cars from
Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia were on hand for
competition. Manassas, Virginia's
Mike Walker has stated he simply loves the Jennerstown oval,
and picked up the win in the first feature ahead of Ron
Robbins, Jr., Mark Fell, Kevin Moore, and Frankie White. This
was Walker's third win at
Jennerstown this season. In the second feature Michael Boar
(Sykesville, MD) made his first ever trip to Jennerstown a
memorable one by taking the win in a race that saw some very
close action. Walker, White, Robbins, Jr., and Ryan Peacher
rounded out the top five.
Next Saturday New
Enterprise Stone and Lime Company will present the action of
the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at Jennerstown Speedway. On
the card will be twin 50-lap features for the Wheeler Brothers
Super Late Models and twin 25-lap features for the New
Enterprise Stone and Lime Late Models. A regular program for
the Day Ford Street Stocks, Somerset Furniture Sales Chargers
and Advance Auto Parts Hobby Stocks will also be held. The PA
Legacy Series has the weekend off. For more information on
