MATTINGLY APPOINTED JENNERSTOWN SPEEDWAY GENERAL
MANAGER |
| |
JENNERSTOWN, PA (Oct. 16).... Jennerstown Speedway
promoter Dave Wheeler announced that Larry Mattingly has
been appointed to the position of general manager at the
Somerset County half-mile asphalt motorsports facility.
A native of Latrobe, Mattingly began his career by
serving as a columnist/reporter for National Speed Sport
News. Following graduation from Clarion State
University, he became the publicity director for
Heidelberg Raceway, and later worked as oval track
operations manager for Cleveland, Ohio-based United
States Auto Raceways, promoting the Cloverleaf, Lorain
County and Painesville Speedways.
Most recently Mattingly has served as an independent
marketing consultant, a co-host on Speedway Productions
"Rappin' on Racin" radio talk show and free lance
motorsports writer for the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat.
"Getting Larry to join us at Jennerstown is a major
plus," Wheeler said. "We've needed someone who is
knowledgeable in the sport to manage the day-to-day
operation of the speedway, and develop long range
marketing and promotional goals. He has the unique
ability to share his past experience, solve the problems
of the present, and help to prepare us for the future."
Reducing the cost of racing for weekly competitors and
increasing the speedway's overall entertainment value
are two of Mattingly's long-term goals.
"Weekly short-track racing is at the crossroad... race
tracks are going out of business due to a shortage of
competitors and a general lack of spectator interest,"
aid Mattingly. "Jennerstown made major strides last
year with the introduction of the 4-cylinder hobby
stocks and "crate-engine" late model division. But, we
need to work even harder to make racing affordable for
those that want to participate in the sport.
"On the grandstand side our goal is to increase the
entertainment value by becoming more interactive and
have fans become part of the show. The growth of our
audience is going to come from families. Families are
the target market. Our challenge is to create an
environment where all members of the family can have fun
at an affordable price," he said.
