MITCHELL NAILS JENNERSTOWN 150
JENNERSTOWN, PA (July 26) ............Like old man river, Richard Mitchell
just keeps on rolling. The West \ Virginia driver extended his western
Pennsylvania extra-distance winning streak to five by streaking to victory
in the
150-lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series late model feature contest at Jennerstown
(PA)
Speedway Sat. evening.`
The two-time NASCAR Northeast region champion dominated the contest,
unofficially leading 130-laps of the race while enroute to victory with his
Howard
Concrete Pumping Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Mitchell took command of the race on the 13th circuit, passing pole sitter
Barry Awtey coming off the fourth turn. The West Virginia University
mechanical
engineering graduate surrendered the lead briefly to Awtey and Tommy Beck on
double file restart situations during the event, but was clearly the class
of
the field.
"We were a little tight in the middle of the turns, and real loose coming
off," Mitchell said, "in fact the car jumped sideways a couple of times. As
I've
said before, it is very difficult to get a car set up perfectly for
Jennerstown....... it's one tough place. We were good enough to win, and
that's what
count."
Interestingly, Mitchell also employed a different race strategy than his
rivals, choosing not to take on tires and fuel during the event.
"We sort of play it by ear concerning pit stops during the long distance
races," added Mitchell. "With all the yellow-flag laps I was a little
concerned
about fuel at the end, but my crew told me not to worry. We thought about
changing tires at the 90-lap mark, but our lap times kept getting better on
the
long runs. We were two to three-tenths of second faster than everyone else
on
old tires. The only thing that would have screwed us up would have been a
caution flag with one or two laps left in the race.. We took a gamble, and
it
worked out. Besides, we saved $450 by not putting on new tires!"
Mitchell will attempt to extend his win skein to six this Friday evening at
Motordrome (PA) Speedway when he attempts to notch his fourth career NAPA
Auto
Parts 200. The former NASCAR BUSCH Series
competitor has already won 100 and 150-lap contests at the Smithton oval
this
year, and would like nothing better than to sweep all three of the triple
crown long distance races there.
"We have never won all three big races at Motordrome in one season,"
Mitchell
concluded, " but we're going to give it a shot."
