PENDLETON, Ind. -- For the 18th
occasion in series history, the ASA Racing Series will compete at the
.522-mile oval of Jennerstown Speedway on Saturday, August 16. This is the
first of two consecutive events in the state of Pennsylvania with the
inaugural event at Lake Erie Speedway scheduled for Sunday, August 24.
In the most recent ASA event at Jennerstown, with 30 laps remaining in the
Pennsylvania 300 Presented by Jani-King, three-time ASA Champion Butch
Miller was knocking on the door and had it opened up to him. Miller was
running in third position on lap 271 when contact between front-runners Joey
Clanton and Kevin Cywinski, allowed Miller to slip through the fracas to
capture his third victory of the 2002 season.
“It’s better to be lucky than to be good and we were pretty good today even
though it looked like a couple of other guys would win the race,” said
Miller, who collected $16,155 of the $179,910 in posted awards.
Miller ended up 1.102 seconds ahead of runner-up rookie David Stremme, who
finished second for the fourth-consecutive race. Two-time series titlist
Gary St. Amant placed third with Kevin Cywinski and Pat Kelly rounding out
the top-five performers.
Miller, driving the ASI Limited Chevrolet, said he felt he was going to end
up third, but got lucky and ended up collecting his 46th victory. This
placed him third in wins behind Bob Senneker (85) and Mike Eddy (57) on the
all-time ASA list.
“I guess if we’d have started earlier this year, we’d have been in the
points chase, said Miller of winning three of the last four events during
the 2002 season. This marked the second time Miller has won a race after
starting on the pole. By winning from the pole, Miller collected a $3,750
bonus from VP Racing Fuels, earning the VP Race Fuel Front Runner Award.
Clanton led 169 of 300 laps around the track and was in second place after
pit stops on lap 232. David Hole, who was competing on a limited basis in
2002, remained on the track, inheriting leadership honors. After the
restart, Clanton was visibly quicker than Hole and on lap 238 made contact
with Hole exiting the fourth turn, spinning him and taking the first
position. Clanton remained in the lead until the lap 271 incident with
Cywinski.
ASA returns to Jennerstown Speedway for the Pennsylvania 250 on Saturday,
August 16, with the first of two practice sessions beginning at 11:30. Pole
qualifying is set for 3:30 p.m. with ASA’s on-track fan autograph session
and live musical entertainment scheduled for 6. Pre-race ceremonies are set
for 7 with the Pennsylvania 250 going green at 7:30 p.m. (EDT)
