Bobby Henry Picks-up First Late Model Win of the 2002 Jennerstown Speedway Season

Jennerstown, PA (May 11, 2002) – Bobby Henry used perfect timing on a late race restart to claim his first win of the 2002 racing season during Stan’s Transmission Service Night at Jennerstown Speedway in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge.  The Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Model pilot avoided cautions throughout the 50-lap feature race to find himself in third place, as the field looked for a green-white-checkered restart.  As the flagman waved the green, Henry shot to the inside and into the lead, which he held to the checkers.  Both Henry and Mark Smith were able to get by the car of Tommy Beck who had led the past 44 laps.  Beck looked to be the class of the field until the late race caution forced a single file restart which gave the opposition one last chance at the lead.  Beck held on to finish third in front of Ryan Hemphill and Mark Cottone, who rounded out the top five. Heat races wins went to Bobby Henry and Tommy Beck.

The Tommy Gale/Haulmark Trailer Pro Trucks saw another very close race as the top drivers battled nose to tailgate throughout the entire 25-lap feature race.  Defending divisional champion Todd Price came from a sixth place starting position to capture the feature win.  Rookie driver Joe Kelley started the race on the pole position and led the first four circuits.  Then it was Jason Lasky and Dave Brunell who took their turn at the front spot over the next seven laps, before Todd Price made his presence known.  Todd Price took the lead on lap 12 and never looked back, capturing his first win of the 2002-racing season.  Rounding out the top five were Jason Lasky, Jason Hounshell, Dave Brunell and Marion Reno, Jr.  Heat race winners were Todd Price and Josh Coughenour.

The Cenwest Street Stock race was dominated by George Nicola, Jr. who led all 25 laps en route to his first Jennerstown Speedway feature win of the 2002 season.  Once again it was a two car battled between Nicola, Jr. and defending divisional champion Adam Kostelnik as they stretched out a reasonable lead over their competitors.  As the laps wound down Todd Knight made his presence known taking over the second spot from Kostelnik, this allowed Nicola, Jr. the chance to pull ahead into a comfortable lead.  A last lap slip by Knight allowed Kostelnik to take over second place, but neither could catch Nicola, Jr.  June Weyant and Rich Nicola finished out the top five.  Heat race wins went to George Nicola, Jr. and Tracy “Dink” Colarusso.

The 96.5 Mountain Charger division saw Curtis Stewart, Jr. make a mid-race pass on the outside of Travis Smith to take over the lead and eventual race win.  Last weeks feature winner Travis Smith held onto second place in front of Justin Lasky, Chuck Slate and Phil “Hoss” Grubbs.  The heat race win went to Chuck Slate.

The Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series saw its first repeat race winner of the 2002 season, as 2001 Rookie of the Year Joey Dennewitz used the outside lane to his advantage as he powered his way to the lead.  Rookie Kyle Martel used a second place starting position to build a healthy lead, while Dennewitz worked his way up from his fifth place starting position.  By the tenth lap, Dennewitz and Martel were the class of the field as they rekindled their battle from a week ago.  Dennewitz shadowed Martel for the next ten laps, using veteran moves in an attempt to frustrate his rookie competitor.  With five laps to go, Martel made his first mistake of the race, which allowed Dennewitz to move into the outside groove, where he made his race-winning pass.  At the finish line it was Dennewitz first, Martel second, Brett Boyer in third, followed by P.J. Ehrlich and Chris Brink rounding out the top five.  Heat race winners were Chris Brink and Joey Dennewitz.

The ever-present threat of rain finally materialized during the Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series victory lane celebrations, forcing the postponement of the Ladies Enduro race until next Saturday, May 18, 2002.  That’s when Jennerstown Speedway will once again showcase the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge, featuring twin 50-lap Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Model races along with regular racing for the Tommy Gale/Haulmark Trailers Pro Trucks, Cenwest Street Stocks, The 96.5 Mountain Chargers and the Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series.  Jennerstown Speedway will also host the second Mens Enduro race of the season. Spectator gates open at 4:00 p.m. with racing starting at 7:00 p.m.  For more information please contact the Speedway Office at 814-629-6677 or log onto www.jennerstown.com
