BOBBY HENRY TAKES SECOND WIN OF 2002 JENNERSTOWN SEASON

By Mike Milliron & Stacie Peles

Jennerstown, PA – June 29, 2002 – Bobby Henry dominated the entire Wheeler Brothers/AC Delco Late Model division feature race Saturday night en route to his second win of the 2002 Jennerstown Speedway NASCAR weekly Racing Series season. Other winners during First Commonwealth Financial Corperation Race Night were Marion Reno Jr. in Tommy Gale/Haulmark Trailers Pro Trucks, George Nicola Jr. in Cenwest Street Stocks, and Joey Dennewitz in Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Car Series. Chuck Slate scored his first career victory in the 96.6 The Mountain Chargers, and Chantel Germek captured the Ladies Enduro feature win.

It was all over but the shouting for Conellsville, PA native Bobby Henry, as he took control of the fifty-lap Wheeler Bros./AC Delco feature event on the second circuit, and never looked back until the checkered flag waved him to victory lane. Well, Bobby did say in his winners circle interview that he enjoyed watching the battle behind him for second between Brad Creighton., Mark Smith, and Barry Awtey throughout the final stages of the race. As the rest of the top five were exchanging positions, Henry simply kept a steady margin between himself and the rest of the front runners.    The battle behind Henry was fast and furious, and in the end it was Mark Smith charging back from the rear of the field after an early race incident to finish second.  Barry Awtey, Brad Creighton and Jayme Bolkovac rounded out the top five.  Heat race wins went to Bobby Henry and Jayme Bolkovac.

Marion Reno, Jr. needed only nine laps to take the lead in the Tommy Gale/Haulmark Trailers Pro Truck feature event before running away from the rest of the field.  Reno started the race in the eighth position and quickly asserted himself into the top three by running the outside lane around the Laurel Highlands Oval.  The beginning of the race saw Dave Marrow and Dave Brunell wage a two-truck battle before Reno came by to take over the front spot.  In the final laps Dave Brunell held onto the second spot while Todd Price charged up through the field passing Marrow for third.  Finishing behind Marrow in fifth was Aaron Will.  Heat race wins went to Aaron Will and Josh Coughenour.

The Cenwest Street Stock feature race saw a familiar face return to victory lane, as George Nicola, Jr. captured another checkered flag.  Bill Ashton returned from mechanical troubles one week ago and started on the pole position, which he held for the first twelve circuits.  Nicola, Jr. started in the sixth position and quickly worked his way to second on lap five, where he hounded Ashton before taking the lead at the half-way point of the twenty-five lap event.  Ashton challenged the leader up until lap 23 when Dink Colarusso managed to get by for second.  Colarusso couldn’t challenge for the win but held on for a fine top-five finish.  Ashton came home in third, followed by Adam Kostelnik and Roger Onstead.  Chris Deyarmin and Dink Colarusso won the heat races.

Records are made to be broken, and Joey Dennewitz made history at the Laurel Highlands Oval as he captured his sixth consecutive Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series feature win.  Mike Smith, who drove for the same Eagle Motorsports team held the previous record of five straight victories.  Once again it was a dominating performance by Dennewitz who led all twenty-five circuits, but had to fend off tough competition from three separate drivers, including Kyle Martel, Brett Boyer and Chris Brink.  Kyle Martel provided the early challenge before Chris Brink took over the second spot and provided another tough challenge, before Brett Boyer came along to take over the runner-up position, which he held to the finish.  P.J. Ehrlich, Chris Brink and Rick Boyer rounded out the top five.  Rick Boyer won the heat race.

The 96.5 Mountain Charger feature event saw a first time winner, as Chuck Slate controlled the second half of the event to earn his first trip to the winners circle.  Slate has been a consistent front runner during his first season of competition, and had to hold off the hard charge of multiple feature winner Curtis Stewart, Jr. in the final laps.  Finishing behind the top two drivers were Travis Smith in third, Phil Grubbs in fourth and Bobby Shipp in fifth.  The heat race win went to Chuck Slate.

Chantal Germek dominated every lap of the Ladies Enduro feature event en route to the checkered flag.  Renee Germek and Robin Barnes claimed second and third positions, to make it a one-two-three finish for the Germek Ladies Enduro racing team.
