JENNERSTOWN, PA (July 6, 2002) –
Bobby Henry claimed his second straight Wheeler
Bros./AC Delco Late Model feature event as Dodge
and Arsenberger Trucking sponsored the NASCAR
Weekly Racing Series Presented by Dodge event at
Jennerstown Speedway. Dink Colarusso claimed
two feature wins in Cenwest Street Stocks twin
25-lap feature events. Other winners included
Marion Reno, Jr. in the Tommy Gale/Haulmark
Trailers Pro Trucks, Curtis Stewart, Jr. in the
96.5 Mountain Chargers, and Joey Dennewitz in
the Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series Brad
McCoy won the Mens Enduro race.
The Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Model feature
event saw Brad Creighton start the race from the
pole position and lead for the first 13
circuits, as last weeks feature winner Bobby
Henry quickly asserted himself into second
place. Henry took over the lead on lap 14, with
Mark Cottone coming up to challenge for the lead
by lap 17. The two drivers would continue this
battle until lap 38 when Mark Smith, using the
outside groove to his advantage, took over the
second position from Cottone. That challenge
lasted until lap 45 when Smith dropped back out
of the top five after the final restart of the
race. Cottone waged one last battle on Henry,
but the Connellsville, PA native had enough car
left in reserve to make it back to victory lane
for the second time in as many weeks. Cottone
finished a very close second, while Brad
Creighton, Neil Brown, and Barry Awtey closed
out the top five. Neil Brown and Mark Smith won
the heat races.
The Cenwest Street Stock double features saw a
double winner as Dink Colarusso claimed both
race wins. In the first event Jeff Petrini
started on the pole position and led the first
13 circuits, while being chased down by George
Nicola, Jr. who finally made the pass for the
race lead on lap 14. Colarusso was not far
behind and immediately took the second place
position before challenging for, and then taking
over the race lead on lap 18. His race winning
move allowed Adam Kostelnik to follow him into
second place, but Kostelnik could not mount an
effective charge for the win, and had to settle
for the runner-up position. The remaining top
five in the first feature were Bill Ashton,
Johnny Jones and George Nicola, Jr. The heat
race winners were Dink Colarusso and Jeff
Petrini.
The second Cenwest Street Stock feature race had
the top ten finishing drivers inverted, putting
the #71 of Robert Smith on the point position,
where he remained until lap six when Johnny
Jones took over the race lead. Colarusso
trailed Jones to the front of the field and
mounted his own challenge for the lead, which he
took on lap 14. From that point on his main
challenger was Jones, who was occupied with
maintaining his position over a hard-charging
Richard Nicola. This allowed Colarusso to
maintain a comfortable advantage to the
checkered flag. Jones held off Nicola to finish
in second, while June Weyant and Jeff Petrini
rounded out the top five.
Marion Reno, Jr. was once again the class of the
field in the Tommy Gale/Haulmark Trailers Pro
Truck division. Reno, Jr. started in the
seventh position and worked his way into second
place by lap seven, where he battled with race
leader Dave Brunell. On lap 11 Reno, Jr. made
an inside move to take over the lead, but could
not shake loose the continued challenge of
Brunell, who hounded him all the way to the
finish line. Jason Lasky came home with a fine
third place finish, while last weeks winner Josh
Coughenour finished fourth and Aaron Will
claimed fifth. Marion Reno, Jr. won the heat
race.
The 96.5 Mountain Charger feature race saw
Curtis Stewart, Jr. once again emerge
victorious, as he claimed his fifth win in six
races at the Laurel Highlands Oval. Stewart,
Jr. started the event from the seventh position
and after a hard fought early race battle with
Phill Grubbs, managed to work his way to the
front of the field and past race leader Greg
Praysner with less than three laps to go.
Finishing behind Praysner were Travis Smith,
Justin Lasky, and Grubbs. The heat race win
went to Curtis Stewart, Jr.
Joey Dennewitz extended his record setting run
of feature race wins in the Cover Insurance
Agency/PA Legacy Series by dominating yet
another 25-lap feature event race around the
half-mile Laurel Highlands Oval. Dennewitz used
the beneficial pole position-starting place to
its utmost advantage as he maintained his
advantage over Chris Brink. Brink maintained
the second position throughout the entire event,
and used a late race restart to challenge
Dennewitz for the lead. At the finish line it
was Dennewitz winning the race by a half Legacy
Car length over Brink. P.J. Ehrlich, Brett
Boyer and Rick Boyer rounded out the top five.
Dennewitz and Brett Boyer won the heat races.
The Mens Enduro race saw “Bad” Brad McCoy rocket
through the top half of the field in the opening
laps to take a lead, which he would not
relinquish throughout the remainder of the fifty
lap event. Brad McCoy overcame two separate
race spins with only minor damage, which allowed
him to remain at the front of the pack. Gregory
Lohr started from the back of the back and made
his way through the field to finish in second
place.
Arsenberger Trucking sponsored a “Best Appearing
Tri-Axle Truck Contest” which brought out 14
great-looking entries. After several laps
around the speedway, the judges finally made
their top three choices. First place went to
Dave Spangler, Sr. from Hollsopple, PA in a 2002
Kenworth, with Todd Gribble of Somerset, PA
placing second in a 2002 Peterbuilt, and Donald
E. Logston of Connellsville, PA came home third
with a 1997 Peterbuilt.
Saylor Dodge and Hollern and Sons Dodge combined
to put on a fine display of cars and trucks
during intermission as part of Dodge Race
Night.
Next week Jennerstown Speedway welcomes the
American Speed Association (ASA) for a two-day
event featuring practice and qualifying on
