JENNERSTOWN, Pa. (July 14, 2002)
- Race leaders Joey Clanton and
Kevin Cywinski made contact with
the No. 83 Camp Fire USA car of
Clanton spinning in turn four of
the .522-mile oval at
Jennerstown Speedway. Both
drivers were taken out of the
top two positions as pole-sitter
Butch Miller inherited the lead
on lap 271. From there, Miller
held off a spirited charge of
rookie David Stremme to bag the
win in the Pennsylvania 300
presented Jani-King.
It was the third time Miller had
secured the lead and the most
significant. Previously he led
for one lap and seven lap
segments while engaged in a
two-car battle with Joey Clanton
from lap 211 until a caution
period on lap 230.
"It's better to be lucky than to
be good and we were pretty good
today even though it looked like
a couple of other guys would
probably win the race," said
Butch Miller after posting the
46th win of his ASA career. "I
guess if we would have started
earlier this year we might be in
the title chase."
Clanton started on the outside
front row and was the dominant
race leader for most of the day.
He topped the field for a total
of 169 laps during five separate
occasions.
Stremme posted a fourth
consecutive runner-up finish and
fifth of the eleven events this
season.
"The number 11 Meijer car wasn't
as good as some others but today
by staying out of trouble and
racing clean we were able to
bring it home pretty decent,"
said the Indiana native. "At
each of the last four tracks I
had never been before so maybe
at Salem (Speedway) I'll be able
to push the door open and win
one of these."
Veteran Gary St. Amant held the
point for 75 circuits during the
opening 100 laps and wound up in
third position.
"It was a decent run for us but
this team is interested in
putting the ACDelco car in the
winners circle," said the
two-time ASA National Champion.
Kevin Cywinski and Pat Kelly
rounded out the top-five
finishers.
Stremme extends his lead over
Dan Fredrickson in the rookie
points chase to 46 markers while
Joey Clanton's margin over Gary
St. Amant in the overall
championship point's standings
falls to 116.
The 2002 ASA Racing Series moves
back to its roots and Salem
Speedway in Indiana for the
Tecumseh 300 on Saturday, July
20. The race will take the green
flag just after 8 p.m. (Central)
and will be telecast on a
same-day tape delay basis on TNN
The National Network starting at
midnight (Eastern).
