Jennerstown
Speedway Prepares for Inaugural Flight 93 Memorials
Jennerstown,
PA (September 12, 2002) --
Jennerstown Speedway
is proud to host the Inaugural Flight 93 Memorial race, “A
Celebration of Heroes” Saturday, September 14, 2002. “A
Celebration of Heroes” will honor the heroes of Flight 93,
which crashed only miles from Jennerstown Speedway, as well as
all of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
Festivities will include the
viewing of the Great
American Flag, the World’s Largest American Flag,
at no cost for the public. The
Great American Flag
weighs seven and a half tons, and measures approximately
400 feet long by 200 feet wide. There will also be a display
of fire and rescue vehicles from across the state. Helicopter
rides will be available as well.
A special on-track salute to the
heroes of Flight 93 and September 11 is also planned. Prior
to the racing, 93 race cars will carry 93 American flags in a
four lap parade around the Laurel Highlands Oval. The four
laps signify the four hi-jacked planes. Following the on
track salute, a parachuter will land during the signing of our
National Anthem.
“Everyone was affected in one
form or another on September 11, especially those of us in
Somerset County. We wanted to honor the heroes that made the
ultimate sacrifice on Flight 93, since it hit so close to
home. A race dedicated to their memory seemed like the
fitting thing to do. We’re pleased to host the
Great American Flag
once again this year, and we’re excited to have all of the
fire and rescue vehicles help us honor America,” Jennerstown
Speedway promoter Steve Peles stated.
Car Quest, along with 96.5 The
Mountain and The Tribune Review will present “A Celebration of
Heroes” with regular racing in the Tommy Gale/Haulmark
Trailers Pro Trucks, Cenwest Street Stocks, 96.5 The Mountain
Chargers and Cover Insurance Agency/PA Legacy Series
divisions. The celebration will be highlighted by a 93-lap
Wheeler Bros./AC Delco Late Model race.
Spectator gates open at 4 p.m.
with R & M Trucking Fast Time Late Model qualifying at 6:15
p.m. The on-track salute will begin prior to the start of
racing at 7 p.m. For more information please contact the
