RICHARD
MITCHELL NORTH CAROLINA SPEEDWAY
Notes & Quotes
"Racing at Rockingham will be a challenge. The track surface is
very abrasive
and hard on tires. Tire management is the key to being
successful at the
Rock. You have to limit wheel spin, and be careful to not
burn-off the
tires. You need to be patient, and not slide the car around."
• Mitchell has participated in three NASCAR BUSCH Series
events in 2002,
finishing 34th and 35th at Nashville Superspeedway, while
garnering 23rd in
the Sept. Richmond contest.
• In six-2002 ARCA RE/MAX Series races Mitchell has recorded
five top-10
runs (Daytona-seventh, Lowe's-fifth, Michigan-third,
Talladega-sixth,
Lowe's-tenth). While leading the July Pocono race, Mitchell
crashed after
cutting down a rear tire, relegating him to 27th in the final
run down.
• West Virginia Governor Bob Wise is tentatively schedule to
be a member
of the Coach USA team pit crew during the Rockingham race. Gov.
Wise
recently bestowed Mitchell with the prestigious DISTINGUISHED
WEST VIRGINIAN
award for his active role in promoting tourism and economic
development in
the Mountain State.
• Legendary Winston Cup crew chief David Ifft will rejoin the
Coach USA
team for the Rockingham race. Ifft, who served as a consultant
to the team
during the final third of the 2001 season, left after the Feb.
Daytona ARCA
event to become the promoter of the Carolina Speedway (Gastonia,
NC). Over
the years Ifft has served as the crew chief for such super stars
as: Darrell
Waltrip, Cale Yarborough and Benny Parsons.
• Mitchell appeared at the recent West Virginia University (WVU)
homecoming football game at Mountaineer Stadium. A 1974 WVU
mechanical
engineering graduate, Mitchell signed autographs to promote the
WVU
Prevention Research Center's new "Race to Health" campaign.
• Along with fellow NASCAR BUSCH Series driver Tim Sauter,
Mitchell hosted
Craig Neves of Fayettesville, NC (winner of a special West
Virginia "Wild and
Wonderful" Department of Tourism promotion) in a two-day
golf/fishing/hunting
outing at Glade Springs Resort on Oct. 21/22.

the
opportunity to become an honorary BUSCH Series pit crew member
at next
springs race at Bristol Motor Speedway. For more details, and a
