Top 10 Finish In His Second USAR Hooters ProCup Series
Event
Driver Robby Marhefka piloted the Marhefka Motorsports Monte
Carlo to a
10th place finish in only his second start in the Hooters USAR
Procup
series.
On a bittersweet day, the team that makes up Marhefka
Motorsports left
Jennerstown Speedway with their first "Top Ten" finish. During
practice
the car was comfortable, yet fast on worn practice tires.
Knowing that
fresh rubber will pick up the pace a bit, the decision was made
on what
adjustments to make. Those adjustments were just what were
needed to
give Robby a car that qualified 9th in the 35 car field.
After his qualifying run Robby said, "I glanced at the time on
the board
as I started my second lap. When I saw the 20.26, I knew we
were good
enough to get into the top 20, so I tried a different line for
the
second lap to see if the car would hold, but it didn't stick as
well as
I'd hoped."
Starting 9th was part of the sweet time.
Once out on the grid Robby got a chance to shake any jitters by
signing
autographs for the fans in the stands. Being the top qualifier
from a
small crop of former regulars at Jennerstown, he was quite
busy. Among
his group of supporters was Cub Scout Troop 464 from Fort
Allen. They
were getting the VIP treatment from USAR and we hope they had a
good
time.
Its now time to race..and here comes the bitter part of the
night. At
the drop of the green flag the racecar directly in front of the
teams
#85 Monte Carlo failed to come up to speed. Having absolutely
no other
option Robby had to pass the car in the only open lane.the
inside one.
Unfortunately, USAR rules don't allow for a pass to be made to
the left
before the start/finish line, which results in a "stop & go"
penalty.
After the Crew Chief & Spotters lobbied with the officials for a
couple
of laps, Robby headed down pit road to serve the penalty.
Upon returning to the track, the 85 car was positioned among the
top 5
cars, but one lap down. Robby would race with this group the
remainder
of the event. Even after a quick 2 tire and fuel pit stop it
was
impossible to pick up the lost lap. Robby demonstrated his
clean, hard
driving style by battling for position among the top 5 cars for
250 laps
without incident.
Although the penalty was difficult to accept, the race was a
textbook
day for the team. Practice was fruitful, the pit crew was quick
and
flawless, the spotters kept the car out of trouble and the
driver
demonstrated he can and will be a force to be reckoned with in
the very
competitive short track series of USAR Hooters ProCup Series.
