RICHARD MITCHELL
POCONO Notes & Quotes

RETURNING TO POCONO
"I love racing at Pocono, it's a drivers track.  A lot of guys compare it to racing on a road course, but I think of Pocono as a 'big' short-track.  Ever time I drive down into turn one it reminds me of my home tracks.... Jennerstown and Motordrome (PA) Speedways.  What I like about Pocono is that the driver can make a difference, it's not all about the car."

POCONO FUTURE
"This could be our last race at Pocono for a while. Our plan is to compete in the NASCAR BUSCH Series in 2003.  Pocono doesn't host any races for that series.  I'll miss racing here.  We didn't make the June ARCA race because we made a business decision to run the BUSCH event at Nashville."

DOWN SHIFTING AT POCONO
"Down shifting on an oval is unique to Pocono.  A lot of drivers don't downshift, and I'm not convinced that it really affects the lap times if you do or don't.  Down shifting is for the engine builders.  They feel it helps take the strain off the engines racing down that long front straight.  My engine builder (Dan Begle) tells me I HAVE to down shift, so I don't have a choice!"

Mitchell recorded an 11th-place finish in his first 2001 Pocono run, after being forced out of the top-10 with ignition problems late in the race. After qualifying seventh-fastest for the second Pocono contest last year, Mitchell was sidelined early with a valve train failure.

Mitchell has recorded top-10 finishes in all three of his ARCA RE/MAX series starts this year........... a career-best third at Michigan Int. Speedway, fifth a Lowe's Motor Speedway, and seventh in the ARCA 200 at Daytona.  The West Virginia University mechanical engineering graduate also has participated in three NASCAR BUSCH Series races.

The Coach USA / Mountaineer Gaming / West Virginia Tourism Pontiac Grand Prix Mitchell is driving at Pocono is a former Bill Davis Racing owned Winston Cup car that was piloted by Ward Burton.  Mike Swaim Jr. finished fifth in the 2001 Pocono ARCA race driving the car.

Mitchell's Coach USA team is a rarity among today's top ARCA / BUSCH Series competitors.  The Mac Hill Motorsports organization doesn't have a single full-time employee and operates from a primitive three-car family garage in Bruceton Mills, WV, as opposed to a state-of-the-art race shop.
